This is an insane list of counter demands.

•Ensure that all existing and future Activision Blizzard games are still available on PlayStation & have parity with Xbox.
•Don't make PlayStation Activision Blizzard games more expensive than Xbox.
Treat all Activision Blizzard games equally on subscription services of Xbox and Playstation.
•Upon completion of the acquisition of Activision, discard all contracts for financial and marketing support that Sony is due to pay Activision in the future.
Agree to start discussions to treat Bethesda games equally on both PlayStation and Xbox (Make all Zenimac games available on Playtation as well)

For CoD for Xbox:
No extra content that is not available on PlayStation.
•No hardware enhancements better than PlayStation.
•No Xbox Game Pass benefits.

Specifically the ones I highlighted just seem outside the bounds of anything they could reasonably request. Bethesda isn't even part of the question. They want it on PlayStation plus with full parity, and to ensure there's no benefit to buying it on Xbox. This is insane hubris.

What kind of leverage does Sony have to issue such demands? The thing about Bethesda games is just lol lmao, like yeah, just throw that in there too to really get on everyone's good side. Talk about reeking of desperation.

Haven't these demands been known about for a bit now? I could have sworn I seen them a while ago because it was the whole reason I started complaining about the hypocrisy and fanboyism of redditards treating Sony like some sort of victim in this whole thing.

Does anyone buy the notion that Sony is acting out of anyone else's best interest, or see them as anything other than a kid throwing a temper tantrum? I couldn't image arguing that this is anything but an act of pure desperation.

They just want to trick the judge. And it might well work. The FTC and CMA have chosen to oppose this as a "stand against big tech", the actual details don't matter.

"It's ok when PlayStation gets the exclusivity on a game mode for an entire year."

So, last week's UK sales numbers for FF are out, with physical/digital breakdowns. It was 46 percent physical, 54 percent PSN (digital.)

Its more a historical piece but this is a leak that allegedly was Sega's plan to overtake Sony during the Sega Saturn generation.

I'd hesitate to call it fan fiction.
As much as I want to read Bernie Stolar's novel-length fan fiction, I'm really gonna need a summary.
After thumbing through it potentially the arrangement of it could be questionable,I'm not familiar with other business strategy documents of the 90's, but the information in the pages look like legitimate documents scanned into something.
I screenshotted the relevant pages i saw from a precursory glance after thumbing through the 272 pages.

My summary:
Sega realized they were being outspent by Sony in terms of marketing. The game production budgets of both Sony and Sega might have been close to each other, but Sony was leveraging at the time their immense budget from their TV and music playing device sectors to jettison the PlayStation into public consciousness via marketing.

Their own estimation was consumers saw Sony as the new hot product on the market and by comparison the Sega Saturn as the old has been. Sony was also getting early adoption by players like EA which helped them gain a foothold in software sales through sports titles.

Sega did admit they lost some of their reputation through the 32x and Sega CD in one of the pages. Also it looks like the PlayStation may have launched cheaper than the Saturn so they also recognized that as a risk and were trying to lower the cost to achieve price competitiveness.

SEGA was never going to "kill" Sony, not with their attitude during that time period.

Even if they didn't make the Sega CD or 32X, SEGA had an internal staff problem, specifically in Japan and how they absolutely hated the US branch and treated westerners like second class citizens... not just the fans and players, but US retailers as well (favoriting a few while alienating others). It's a problem that to this day still affects them and their games.

That's not even including the hassle it was to make games for the Saturn in the first place.

I mean yeah, but that's a 2 decade hindsight take from a 1000ft overview.
This look like an internal document from the Sega marketing department of 1997. It probably wasn't in the minds of the marketing department about what problems existed between Sega of America and Sega of Japan or the disparity between audience treatment of different countries.

I still haven't even come across the line that the article sighted of "kill Sony" in the document, not for a lack of looking. The article could be selling this document as more inflammatory than it is. It just looks like them deciding how they were going to market the Saturn over the next several months. Included in it are some of their marketing material such as branded cereal boxes and other merchandice they planed to release that year in partnership with Quaker Oats and other companies.

Just food for thought. Like I said its a historical piece.

Probably the thing that stands out to me about it and the timing of its release is it shows this has been a pattern of Sony dominating in the video game market since day 1. Its timing compared to current Sony fighting the FTC case against Microsoft just shows there's nothing new under the sun for Sony.

One interesting thing I noticed is Sega was using Microsoft email servers at the time.

Even in the early-90s, before they dropped Saturn, Sega was in a pretty shaky position. Aside from the speedy blue blur, which at the time had games that were selling like hotcakes, Sega needed to be on the top of the console war race with more properties. They've proven that Nintendo was considered to be little toys made for pussy-whipped Barney loving babies and Sega was meant for the real gabagool big guys.

Having that said, they weren't originally intending to outdo Sony in the console war, even if they and the aforementioned Nintendo rejected Sony's idea for the PlayStation (the whole Nintendo and Philips joint venture kicked in with their infamous line of Zelda and Mario games for the CDi after they rejected Sony). Sega still wanted to win in the console war with the results being unnecessary ad-ons (CD and 32x), and had cancelled their upcoming ad on with a working title under Neptune. In Japan, the Saturn was out and was selling pretty good over there, but in the west, Sega of America dumped said Saturn in the inaugural E3 on the same day, while Sony already shattered the competition with its presentation, notably the price for the PlaySation.

It's a historical work that, as obvious as it is, I still want to point that out because it didn't take until the late-90s to finally compete with Sony and rush out the Dreamcast, which while successful at first, was already beaten by the PS2, thus Sega called quits in the console industry in 2001.

Wait a damn minute. I recall MW2019 gutting a survival mode for PS exclusivity for a whole YEAR. And how many Call of Duty games were offered with Sony's PS+? Sony will STILL have free reign to provide CoD on PS+ if they so wish with their 10 year Activision deal.

Does anyone buy the notion that Sony is acting out of anyone else's best interest, or see them as anything other than a kid throwing a temper tantrum? I couldn't image arguing that this is anything but an act of pure desperation.
Remember how Sony reacted to cross-play? Yeah, Jim Ryan is being histrionic yet again. All that effort could've been placed on reviving their existing FPS IPs.

Neptune was just a Megadrive/32X combo console, like the Mega CD/Megadrive combo they actually released to zero fanfare or interest.

Edit:
And here I am not giving a single flying fuck about anything that Activision publishes outside of Sekiro and leaving aside how I don't want the big fish to get bigger, feeling absolute apathy. I guess those CoD games really are the lifeblood of the current "console war". Christ, what a shit generation.

Certainly is interesting to know what Sega was thinking at that point in time. I barely know anything about the Saturn outside of some emulation, but it certainly managed to do everything wrong at the right time and due to "POLYGONS FUTURE!" being the mantra of the day, really was unable to flex that pixel scaling power. A pity, but the 32X/Sega CD were such huge wastes of resources and that early Saturn release really put both of it's feet in a grave and caused the poor Dreamcast to have a criminally short lifespan.

but in the west, Sega of America dumped said Saturn in the inaugural E3 on the same day, while Sony already shattered the competition with its presentation, notably the price for the PlaySation.
That was actually Sega of Japan's decision. Tom Kelinsky, the CEO of Sega of America and the man who basically made Sega a household name in the west, tried to desperately talk them out of it, to no avail.

The saturn is basically Sega's ST-V (Sega Titan Video) arcade board shoved into a little box to sell to the home market.

These are the games that the ST-V powered

The specs of the ST-V

Here's a much more expanded description of the Sega Saturn specs. You'll notice the similarities between the ST-V when you take a quick glance.

The saturn was a better beast for 2D games, specifically fighters, which suffered under the PS1 with missing animations and things like not being able to tag in your partner in the VS series. The saturn ports were 1:1 with their arcade counterparts.

Ah yes, the mother of all projections:
Jim Ryan: Yeah. We've got to be mindful of our responsibility to our install base. Minecraft - the demographic playing that, you know as well as I do, it's all ages but it's also very young. We have a contract with the people who go online with us, that we look after them and they are within the PlayStation curated universe. Exposing what in many cases are children to external influences we have no ability to manage or look after, it's something we have to think about very carefully.
The all-ages Sony, known for their family-friendly image and walled-off online experience, has to watch out for the big bad Nintendo, known for their adult-focused userbase and violent online voice chat :stress:
