Sorry for the long post, just want to give more info about the LGBT shit in China. tldr: they never liked fags, been cracking down for a while, ban only impact Chinamen in China.

There definitely is a gap between the crack down on gay shit for the chinamen and that of the organizations run/used/well-known by Westerners. Since a few years back (I would say latest at 2018?) they were closing down LGBT centers/groups/clubs and confiscating rainbow flags/pins on uni campus. Even some live theatre clubs at top unis (I think Fudan?) in Shanghai had to close because their focus was "feminist"/"queer"(performed Vagina Monologue and such). It's all par for the course though, everything that's tangentially related to Western ideologies and anything slightly politically provocative have been under the crack for while, I think around the 2016-2017 mark. Even the feminists who were saying nothing but "don't beat your wife to death" went to peepeepoopoo prison. A yaoi writer with bunch of fans on weibo got sentenced to 10yrs for writing gay yaoi. Go figure.

On top of everything, the gay shit was never as prominent as it is in the West. It was only more visible in very Westernized cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu etc, and it's more of a "don't ask don't tell." No one is going to send you to peepeepoopoo prison for just being homosexual and have a little make up on, you can even have drag at some underground events, but you definitely shouldn't be flaunting or promoting it, not to mention having any sort of social organization or following.
