Video Games You Must Play Before You Die - The virtual experiences you need to have or see before becoming deceased

Back in 2010 someone made a book called the 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die. It contains many titles most people would expect but also some experimental ones. The last edition came out in 2013 so it's fair to say it's a little outdated now.

What would such a list look like if it was made by Kiwi Farm users? What games should someone go out of their way to play before they aren't on this world anymore? Which are just good and which ones just have a distinctive flair that should be witnessed by all?

I'm not a gamer. When I was a gamer the PS2 was the hotness. I had the big black console and it was mind blowing. After the Cyberpunk anime came out the game went on sale so I bought it. My pc is no slouch so I played it on the highest settings and holy shit was my mind blown. My only problem with it is that I'm a old fucker and my fingers don't work good enough on the keyboard and mouse. One of my kids wanted a vr setup for this last Christmas. I tried it out and that was fucking fun. It was much more intuitive for me even though the graphics and shit were sub par. Whenever we get to the point of full dive SAO type shit I'll strap on the Nerve Gear and never look back.

I almost feel autistic enough to try to make an actual 1001 list, sounds kinda fun.

At least one of the retro zelda games where you don't have to fight Ganon (so link awakening or majora's maks).

Any shmup where you can experience the extra bullshit boss with 10 phases (I suggest touhou 8 ).

Super mario bros 3/world

Broken sword 1 + 2 or Monkey island 1 + 2

Katawa Shoujo.
There's something about the combined forces of autism from 4chan smelted together and forged into a visual novel that takes great care to emulate the good parts of visual novel tropes but with a heavy serving of things that make the internet great, like untempered retardation and pockets full of spaghetti-autism.

You could probably play it without the H scenes but there's some great comedy and some bittersweet moments that happen during said scenes, so I'd leave it up to the potential player.
Obviously this game is a visual novel so if you aren't into reading and animu tropes, I understand skipping it, but if you are already a fan of animu and you somehow haven't played Katawa Shoujo..just fucking do it.

Also, Hollow Knight.
Yes, it's a metroidvania and yes, it has Souls-like combat and death mechanics so it's not an easy recommend if you aren't into slamming your face against a brick wall for potentially hours, but if you are a masochist and enjoy getting lost both in a universe made up of intelligent bugs and gameplay that tries not to hold your hand too much you should definitely check it out.
