I think it's both financial and regret. He realized there is no future for edgy content but he also clearly is bothered by his past. Go watch the video where he denounces his old videos and look at his face and eyes. You can't fake that. That stuff is the reason why I think he's panicking about his failed attempt to cash in on the new trend. He saw that times were changing and how easily other people were able to do a 180 and profit from it. The regret is probably less about his past and more that he's struggling to understand why he's failing where idiots like Ethan Klein could succeed. I think Ian could be able to pivot away from being an edgelord bullytuber into something else, and he probably keep some portion of his old audience that has 'matured' with him as well as attract a new audience, even as he disavows his content.
The problem to me is that Ian has, besides being edgelord bullytuber, no other skills and talents to fall back too, a common condition among Internet Famous YouTubers. So once he dropped that shtick, he was left with absolutely nothing.
But he can't really quit being a content creator, because as I said before he has no other skills or talents to do anything else. So his life from now on is going to just be increasing pathetic attempts to catch the limelight and try to milk the remaining audience for anything he could milk them for.

I remember when in some content cop era video Ian said something along the lines of “I’m training to become an electrician, because this internet shit isn’t going to last forever”, and at the time I thought “well that’s very reasonable and farsighted.” It was said very deadpan like all his delivery was, but without the obvious seething cynicism his jokes were usually dipped in.
