The US soldier who crossed the border into North Korea in a suspected defection shouted "ha ha ha" as he ran, a witness has said.

A US service member reportedly crossed the border into North Korea from the demilitarized zone (DMZ) - the heavily fortified border between North and South Korea.

The United Nations Command reported the incident and stated that the individual is now believed to be in North Korean custody.

The witness, who was part of the same tour group visiting the DMZ, gave their account of the incident.

According to the witness, they had just visited one of the buildings at the site when they heard a man give out a loud "ha ha ha" and saw him run in between some buildings.

The witness told CBS News: "This man gives out a loud 'ha ha ha,' and just runs in between some buildings. I thought it was a bad joke at first, but when he didn't come back, I realizsed it wasn't a joke, and then everybody reacted and things got crazy."

A US official said the service member was initially being escorted back to the United States for disciplinary reasons but somehow managed to return and join a border tour before crossing into North Korea.

The witness mentioned that military personnel reacted quickly to the man's actions, but there was initial confusion.

They stated that there were no North Korean soldiers visible where the man ran, likely due to the border restrictions enforced during the coronavirus pandemic.

After the man crossed the border, the tour group was rushed back to the Freedom House, where everyone had to provide statements about the incident before being taken back to their bus, he said.

The witness was deeply affected by the incident and shared their emotions about it. On the way back on the bus, they counted the number of people who went in and came back, realising that one person was missing.

They said: "I'm telling you this because it actually hit me quite hard," the witness said. "It was on the way back in the bus, and we got to one of the checkpoints... Someone said we were 43 going in and 42 coming back."

The DMZ separating North and South Korea is heavily fortified, and the incident adds to the tension between North Korea and the US, South Korea, and Japan.

North Korea has been conducting missile and rocket tests, while the US expects North Korea to conduct a new nuclear weapon test.

The US recently sent a nuclear-armed submarine to South Korea, which further adds to the tensions.

Kim Jong Un's sister warned the US against reinforcing its commitment to defend South Korea, threatening a move away from negotiations.

The situation remains sensitive, given the unresolved Korean War and the presence of US troops in South Korea.

Ooof I'm guessing this service member, about whom not a single detail is provided, probably should have been screened out.

Any guesses on what protected class he's a part of? Someone obviously making problems and delusional enough to think NORTH KOREA is a great place to hole up until the heat dies down has to have some sort of "get out of trouble" card to play to escalate this far.

I read this guy was about to receive some sorta disciplinary action, which I'm guessing he figured he'd get a dishonorable discharge for. I guess he thought if he's some nobody about to be handed a felony with no job prospects in the US, then why not try his hand in North Korea? Probably figures they'll make him a propaganda piece.

wonder how long it will be before he stops laughing and realizes what a huge mistake he's made? might be optimistic, someone retarded enough to do this probably doesnt have the intelligence for reflecting and realizing they were wrong.
Depends. If NK want to use him for propaganda purposes they might put him in a gilded cage and parade him around like a king saying "look how much better life is in this wonderful paradise of North Korea?"

If not, they might just use him as a punching bag and tell the world "US soldier? What US soldier? There's nobody like that here. Certainly not in our torture chambers."

There's a documentary called "Crossing the Line" about an American who defected to NK. Old guy now, still there I think.

Basically he got trotted out in front of cameras for a while as a big propaganda tool before settling into a life of nothing to do except eat rations of white rice.

You're think of James Dresnok, he's dead.

British papers are reporting his name as Pvt 2nd Class Travis King, aged 23. Apparently he'd spent a month in a SK jail for assault and was due to fly back to the US today, when he joined a tourist bus instead. The US Army is being cagey about releasing further details about Travis, but military PR offices are always like that.
This sounds like a retarded episode of M.A.S.H.

Come on now he spends alot of time fishing too. Which by his own admission he hates. But hey he does alot of bowling. I wonder if he met north koreas version of the dude

He also drank himself to death and died in november 2016

That said, this guy seems about the same level of IQ and trying to defect for essentially the same reason. The US military clearly isn't too picky about the intelligence of its cannon fodder

This guy should ask Otto Warmbier how NK treats Americans who run afoul of their rules... Oh wait, you can't, because Otto is dead.

Also, you have to be a fucking lunatic to try and cross the DMZ, it's one of the most heavily mined places in the world.

I have a feeling this guy is going to regret not just taking his Dishonorable discharge and/or sentence in Leavenworth before too long.

He won a permanent stay in a Communist utopia.
Might be worth it if he avoids punishment and they give him a waifu and 3 meals a day. Not worth it if they stick him in a prison camp until he dies of tuberculosis or something.
