This is not social media but I think this fits here. I was watching the news as usual and saw the graduation ceremony of the Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ) of Turkey. Some graduates were waving the sacred troon flag and the holy "progress" flag with nigger stripes. I don't have a picture of it but I found pictures of their previous ceremonies where the graduates had also carried the troon flag.

I disagree on the name of the rose , I think it’s a very good book. This place makes me think of it a lot - the themes of laughter being fatal to tyranny certainly chime.

I have a feeling he might be rather more critical of Reddit type ‘bash the fash’ types than they’d like. The current madness isn’t the same stuff Eco experienced although all tyranny movements do have things in common. Look at the modernity Vs tradition stuff as an example. Eco was dismissive of those who dismissed modernity, but now the reverse is true and the insane progs dismiss and destroy all tradition. In that sense it’s more like the classic commie ‘year zero’ stuff.
Eco saw things through the ‘facsists bad’ lens becasue those were the times he grew up in. What Orwell understood and what eco probably couldn’t admit becasue he was in the middle of it (although his work does get it) is that the labels of facism and communism are just labels. The same madness underlies them both - dehumanising, destroying, killing. The methods are a little different, and communism’s killed a lot more, but most of the underlying ideologies are the same. Orwell got that because he came from Britain and went TO fight with people he wasnt part of whereas Eco was too close.
