From experience I found straight up ignoring them to be alot worse for their ego, given enough time. They NEED the attention, regardless whether it's positive or negative. That strategy really only works when they're part of a social circle you frequent though.

I make sure to almost never engage in their bullshit and on the rare occasion I lean in a little, I make sure to only be the tiniest bit passive aggressive. Just enough to make it sting, but not enough to give off the impression I'm outright hostile. When they inevitably start freaking the fuck out and going on a crusade against you, they'll be mostly on their own and eventually leave out of frustration. I've managed to pull this off a couple of times and when it comes to these people NOTHING feels better than cleansing them from the communities you frequent while at the same time getting away with it and not being branded an unhinged sperg.

And the best part of it all? You potentially get to peak alot of people.
