I don't think it's a conscious thing or anything weird. I've noticed some traits about women I've dated that, in retrospect, remind me of my mom. For example, my mom was always very capable and willing to do work and deal with problems on her own, so women with the whole "tee hee, I'm just a girl so I'll ask a man to handle it" attitude has always been a major turn-off.

I think it's more about the mental model you form early on about the proper way for the opposite sex to conduct themselves. If you have a good mom, you'll form good, healthy expectations. If you have a bad one, you take your wife's last name and talk about how great and empowering it is that she does porn.

The reason for that is biological. Nothing like an Oedipus complex but you're coded to aspire for a partner who resembles all of the positive traits of your parents.
