You definitely aren't wrong, but I guess until the tumblr influx/the cat lady mod team catering to them instead of banning them for funnsies, it was still an operable tumor. There was enough creatives hanging around SA could have been turned around with competent administration. So that's what I consider the death of SA, when the cancer spread everywhere and a cure was no longer possible.

Now, when someone man in a dress from CSPAM or D&D comes in to derail a thread with racial or genderspecial bullshit, anyone who takes issue is probed/banned, anyone who doesn't completely agree with how everything is racist is banned, and if there isn't enough tranny ballwashing the thread gets locked. The forums were already culture shifting due to cat-ladies taking over the modship reigns. Ozma (fat) and Eggplant Wizard (real name Elanor Jefferson who worked in the classics department of Rutgers University and wrote werewolf and incest fiction for Amazon under the pen name Kali Lowe) lead the charge to protecting fags, queers and Troons, and basically prevented anyone right of Mao from getting onto the mod team.

It started waaaay before this, it started when Fistgrrl combined Current Events with whatever fucking useless forum to make D&D because el pinto grande was too retarded to cope in CE. CE was pretty much self moderated and debate quality was generally extremely high for an internet forum. Fistgrrl claimed the reason was because it was not newbie friendly because you had to actually be able to back up what you said with good citations and were expected to back out gracefully when you couldn’t. It was absurdly politically diverse and everyone got along because everyone was there to sperg about complex topics and get other perspectives.

OTOH, D&D was heavily moderated and like the rest of SA disagreeing on any level with a moderator was very specifically against the rules, so it was ruined in days and turned into a cesspit.

SA, in its heyday had a lot of very big names posting fairly anonymously. If you were around Creative Writing enough and knew his style pretty well you knew which account Steve Martin posted as, for example, but no one ever outed him or the others. It was a pretty cool place, but the decay that set in in 2003 and escalated every year after killed it even before the tranny jannies took root. It was kind of a throwback to much earlier USENET newsgroups where if, say, you were in alt.fan.douglas-adams talking about Hitchhiker's Guide there was a good chance one of the people in the thread was actually Douglas Adams. The internet used to be a much better (and much worse) place.
