Hector Martin / Héctor Martín Cantero / @marcan42 / マルカン / @marcan42x / @marcan@treehouse.systems / Asahi Lina / Asahi Linux - Developer of Asahi Linux with a VTuber persona. Made Byuu's death unbelievable. Constantly accuses others of harassment and abuse. Hates Hacker News and Kiwi Farms.
I'm not sure the list from the State Department means anything at all. If you search for deaths in Japan, it says there's about one a month for the last few years, then nothing for the second half of 2021. That strikes me that someone at the Embassy or wherever lost or forgot about these records. Bear in mind the list is updated every six months, so that's almost exactly one update's worth.
The greatest argument for Byuu's death is that, as far as we know, he hasn't cropped up somewhere else online doing autistic low-level work, which for someone like him would be hard to avoid. The greatest argument against is that Hector and "Wayne Beckett" are literally the only sources - nothing from his parents, nothing from his husband, nothing in his local paper, no online obituaries, no GoFundMe for the funeral, etc.

Before all the down time (which is why I never posted the results because we couldn't find anything, this was during the really long period where the site wasn't functional) I did his entire family tree back two generations to see if there was any mention by anyone in his extended tree.
First off his father is dead. His mother is remarried. Half brother in Tennessee he seems to have no relationship with. His uncle, his mother's brother I'm not positive has children of his own. There was not a whole ton of people in his family. But I have a hard time believing his mother or maybe his half brother wouldn't have said something to the media.
But most suspicious to me were actually his friends ham fisted attempt to show proof of his death show a complete ignorance how next of kin laws work, especially in a privacy conscious country like Japan. This before before we even get to the state department list.
Unrelated but here's the same troon whining about "whiteness" in the fediverse but not naming the CSAM problem just to remind you of what he's usually like. source (a)

We know Hector's a fantasist, and I'm sure that 99% of what he said is bullshit (the faggy French song, the talks with the police, etc.). But that doesn't mean that Byuu didn't actually kill himself, just that there's no real evidence either way. I'm genuinely unsure.
We know from his interactions with Null that he was having some sort of mental health episode in late June 2021, and I'm leaning towards "having a mental health episode followed by suicide" being more likely than "having a mental health episode followed by a disappearance, with absolutely fantastic opsec"... despite how much Hector might have embellished it.

What opsec? All he has to do is not post under previously known identities. We never claimed he wasn't still active online, just laying low. He had previously expressed the desire to start all over. Plastic urns are not a convincing exit.
I have not finished reading this thread yet, but I would like to add that George Hotz has defended Kiwifarms on his livestream. If someone wants to include that all his streams are timestamped, I just thought I would add that.
On an unrelated note, if we are making threads on techcows, a perfect one to make a thread on who is friends with Hector is Drew Devault, who is a massive meme on /g/ and a massive lolcow himself.
This is a great and detailed OP, though I wonder if Hoaxin' Hector will end up in Internet Tough Guys or Internet and Technology if the thread comes to pass, though I know he's going to go into DFE Mode if he catches a whiff of the OP.

Don't forget, the list became a focus because Hector originally claimed it would be proof of byuu's suicide. The fact that he about-faced on its relevance later is just proof of how much of a disingenuous faggot he is.

Why would he even mention the list if he knew the suicide was faked? I think Hector got taken for a ride by byuu and put away wet.
byuu clearly had some smarts (as he wasn't doxed before all the fuckery, probably because nobody really cared, but even so he's relatively low-key) whereas Hector is a flaming idiot in all possible ways except apparently with putting linux on weird apple shit.
I thought at first that the vtuber thing was like Wrestling Kayfabe, everyone knows it's fake but you're supposed to buy in while watching, like a movie. But he really believes this TOTALLY NOT ME, "glasses and mustache disguise" is working?
Even after years lurking, I'm still amused by how people delude themselves.

Yep. It's painfully obvious that he's the Vtuber. It almost makes you wonder if his denial is just supposed to be a funny tongue-in-cheek thing... until you see how he gets super angry when people talk about it on HackerNews or wherever else.
My personal theory (based on zero evidence) is that Hector wants to troon out, but there's something stopping him from fully committing. Maybe his parents would be devastated by it, and Hector wants to avoid that. Or maybe he just has enough self-awareness to realize that he can never truly become a cute animu girl IRL. Whatever the reason is, he compromises by living out his troon fantasies on the Internet via his "Asahi Lina" persona.
I have no doubt that all of Marcan's Internet friends & associates know he's "Lina". Marcan's probably open about it in private, and I imagine he enjoys the "social credit" it earns him among his cohort. He gets to reap the benefits of being a troon without actually trooning out IRL.
All of this would explain why he barely tries to hide it... but then suddenly gets mad whenever a rando points out the obvious fig leaf on a public forum.
I'm not going to dig into his family. It's interesting though that the Macroword website likely belongs to his parents (based on the About & Experience pages). If true, they work as translators who localize software from English -> Spanish. I can see how that influenced Marcan at a young age.
Agus Cantero is probably a family member as well. Again, not going to dig into it.
I suspect Soundflora is one of Marcan's Japanese troon friends. He(?) is particularly into composing weeb music, and he also made a theme song for Asahi Lina. Just a coincidence, I'm sure!
Nananonanase.com is broken, but it's clearly meant to belong to this person. Seems like another Japanese troon into art & music. Oh, and check this out... I'm sure it's just another coincidence.
Fuwafuwa.house is broken, and a quick search didn't turn up another obvious troon friend. HOWEVER, I noticed a similarly named website (fuwafuwa.us) [Archive] that sells degen anime apparel, stickers, etc. So it probably does belong to one of Marcan's friends after all.
"Asahi Lina" allows Hector to double-dip on donations (shocker).
Hector, being a self-absorbed hedonistic faggot, had a celebration stream for "Asahi's" fake birthday.
"Asahi's" stated birthday is March 1, same day as Asahi Linux's first public release.
Current iteration of the "Asahi Lina" Twitter account was created in December 2020, conveniently also when Hector announced and formalized the Asahi Linux project.
Account was dormant for two years after, suddenly springing to life on April 1st. How coincidental a previously unknown super-special GPU driver developer appeared out of nowhere and agreed to be the literal Asahi mascot.
Seems a fake birthday stream wasn't enough gayops for Hector. Weeks after (April 1st, again) he had another self-congratulatory broadcast (archive) for his 1-year anniversary of alter-ego Vtuber streaming. Just as cringe and trash as you'd imagine, but the highlight is Hector trying to prove us wrong and showing that he, in fact, is not Asahi Lina, by appearing on the stream himself to "sing" duets with "Asahi" (original video with timestamp):
(WARNING: severe earrape)
Key takeaways:
Used the same "hacking" graphics as the fake "stream hijacking" Asahi Lina intro did. This time set up as an "I'm hacking you back" gag. As with the first gay fakery, likely how Hector cuts to pre-recorded footage during a "live" stream
Segment ended with a transition animation unique to only Hector's guest appearance, at least based on what I could find during these 5 hours of hell. Again hints at incorporated pre-recorded footage
No overlapping speech during the "Asahi" and Hector's "conversations". No interruptions, no talking over each other, etc. Expected from Hector faking a conversation with himself
Duet had overlapping vocals but otherwise did not sound like two people sharing a duet in real time. More like two independently recorded vocal tracks combined in Audacity
Should be pretty clear that Hector gets off on his peers tolerating (or being easily fooled by) his half-assed blatant faggotry and getting away with it.

Apparently the excuse is that among the vtuber fandom, it's considered super taboo to speculate about the person pulling the strings. How something started five minutes ago can have taboos, I don't know.

Unfortunately Alyssa's deleted his Mastodon account, so I can't find the message, but a few weeks ago he posted something about condemning the "vile transphobic abuse" directed at Lina. Someone replied "Lina's trans? That's so cool!", or somesuch, and it wasn't contradicted. So evidently Marcan-as-Lina is seen as a troon... make of that what you will.

The computer security scene is getting overrun with these faggots. It's at a point where you have to put up with it to have pretty much any interaction with fellow researchers. There have been plenty of trannies in the space in years past, but they were significantly more chill than the raging retards you see now. It's at a point where I genuinely can't handle dealing with yet another community I have held dear for many years because of these faggot fetishists.
Every low-level programmer essentially goes down one of two paths: Join the 41% or be one of the few remaining who has to pick up the pieces, since god knows modern programmers (read: pajeets) wouldn't know memory management if it showed up and shat in their streets. We're a dying breed. Every time I see an electron or node app, I die a little more inside.
It's been said before, but I'm genuinely surprised this guy hadn't got a thread before. Guess the thought process was Byuu wasn't using his thread anymore so we might as well let Martin have it. Excellent job on the OP btw.
I used to be fascinated by the wii hacking scene back in the day. The whole concept of running whatever programs you want on the Wii without Nintendo's permission, and the fact that my broke family could play the newest releases was really cool. Back when Hector Martin was with Failoverfl0w/teamtwiizers, he updated a blog dedicated to researching Wii hacking, and insights with the console hardware, https://hackmii.com/ and I remember reading through all his articles completely engrossed.
Credit where it's due, he was able to simplify the world of wii hacking down to a way even a dumbass kid like myself could comprehend, I particularly enjoyed his breakdown of the Wii startup disc which was something of an urban legend before he documented what it was and what it did.
After double checking hackmii.com, it turns out marcan barely contributed any posts, probably less than 1/10 were written by him.
Most were written by the other team twiizer members, mainly Ben Byer aka Bushing who seemed to be the real brains behind wii hacking and passed away in 2016.
Makes me wonder how much marcan actually did with team twiizers beyond hosting their sites, most of marcan's posts were just him bitching about nintendo, people selling wii hacks they made, or creating drama with other wii devs.
Anyway, recently I found a wii dirt cheap at a goodwill and decided to hack it and give it to my friend so we could play Mario Kart CTGP online.
I remembered from back in the day that the go-to solution for hacking wiis was letterbomb (no relation to the late great Dr. Theodore Kaczynski) so I went to go set it up and found this abomination. https://please.hackmii.com/
After double checking the date to confirm that pride month had ended, I found out that apparently letterbomb is just permanently gay now. That didn't stop some guys over on wiibrew.org from trying to revert it, at least for the wiki article, but unfortunately the jannies wouldn't budge.
I tried to track down where Martin said he wanted it to permanently stay with the gay logo, but it's probably in some long lost twitter thread from his deleted accounts.
Not that I doubted he would pull something like this, but I wanted to see how spergy he was when making the announcement.
I have no idea how much work Martin put into making Letterbomb a reality, maybe it was just a personal project he worked on by himself, but I'm fairly certain more devs than just him contributed to it.
The wiibrew wiki lists the developer as Team twiizers, which had at least 8 people involved.
It was originally announced and posted on hackmii.com by blasty, who multiple sites have credited as the creator of bannerbomb, and Hector Martin's only confirmed contribution seems to be hosting the site it's on.
Unless Hector contacted every contributor to the project and they gave him the ok to permanently change it gay, I don't see where he gets off undermining the work of the entire team to advance his own politics.
I ended up having to bust out my old shitty 2gb sd card and install the Brawl softmod, smashstack, instead.
Normally I wouldn't care since it's just a logo on the site you get the file from, but letterbomb permanently places a letter icon on your wii Message board, and I didn't want my friend checking his messages and asking why there's a gay letter that crashes his console.
Sorry for not archiving some of the sites, archive.today isn't working for me right now for some reason.
