I'm more confused why she ever thought she could have both. Clearly it was never going to work out. But I think people would be more understanding if she just said that the religion forced her to be so conservative that she hit her limit and had to do something totally radical by comparison in order to feel alive again or something.
It seems like she was essentially a lesbian until graduation. Tumblr gender shit was at critical mass back then so I'm sure a lot of people have grown out of it. I think that's partly why there's such a strong push to get medical intervention started ASAP before they're able to realize it's a phase and back out.
