From what I know, BPDs tend self harm to relieve the emotional pain. The self harm they engage in is superficial.
Ritualistic cutting releases adrenaline and dopamine. Similarly to the way a heroin addict will "get high" off of just the act of setting up the spoon, tying off, and seeing the blood pull back into the needle, a cutter will get high off of the act of engaging in cutting. The release of these feel good chemicals also masks the pain somewhat. They become addicted to the chemical release they receive upon engaging in the act, and this is true of most people who engage in body-focused repetitive behaviors like skin picking, hair pulling, nail biting, etc.

It seems Canada has the same 72 hour hold system as US. Except if they get "cerfitified" for involuntary commitment it is 1 month before a review in US it tends to be 2 weeks.

So If i send a client to the hospital in US if she VOLUNTARILY commits herself she is held 72 hours then reviewed. If she refuses and is involuntary commited the average stay is 2 weeks.

i agree with you about the neurochemical aspect, but i think that there's more to it. i've encountered people who have harmed themselves in my personal life, both male and female, and they've all shared some characteristics ... they were young, they were lonely, and they were depressed, if not clinically, than at least with a sort of existential dread with which they didn't know how to cope. i had a conversation with one of them, and she explained cutting as something that gave her clarity. she constantly felt angry, frustrated, and sad, but couldn't find any "legitimate" reason why she felt that way. so she cut herself. her exact words were, "it gives me something to cry about."

while i doubt that this accurately or completely describes what's going on with kelly, i don't doubt that as she does more damage to herself physically, she also inflicts more psychological and emotional damage upon herself, which in her fucked up head and heart, grants her permission to continue with the damage. i honestly think that kelly simply wants the world to see her mangled body as a manifestation of her mangled soul, and then to respond accordingly.

IDK about Canada but in the states the core Medicare program doesn’t cover shit. Some states have slightly less shitty programs, but it’s still a couple grand annually, absolute max. That sounds like a lot until you realize that’s 1-2 crowns/root canals.
Not to change the subject to insurance, but this is often true if you have Medicare because of poverty. Although … I have a friend who’s been in cancer treatment for a decade-weekly chemo- and she only has Medicare and everything is covered. My own experience (not with cancer) was when I had a time of poverty in my 20s was not so good. I could not find a doctor to cover something much easier and more common than cancer. It certainly taught me that insurance is important and I found a job that offered it right away.

When a person turns 65, they are forced on Medicare, whether they have insurance or not, whether they want it or not, but it does seem to cover most of what is necessary unlike the poverty one. (Which is called MediCal here and has different names based on the states.). But old people keep their old insurance as secondary that covers drug insurance too if they take prescriptions.

No insurance covers much in the way of teeth. Some will pay for cleaning. Some even allow a thousand a year for issues. Few will do much more. Teeth are very expensive and a thousand is about a couple cavities so take care of them!

Back to Kelly-I heard a recent podcast that happened in the 80s-a nurse was supposedly stalked and abused. She had 90 incidents over a period of less than a decade including physical abuse, notes, damage to her house, weird phone calls, and several times she was attacked (once somebody stuck a knife through her hand to the floor) Black stockings were placed on her neck each time. There were many weird things that nobody ever saw. The notes were cut from magazines. Strangely, nothing happened when people were around. She lived with a cop for a year or so and it stopped, but it started up when he left. Eventually. She was found dead, bound with stockings. Her cause of death was a morphine OD.

However, the stories were almost too crazy, nobody ever saw it. Like Kelly, she’d been institutionalized a few times and was diagnosed with histrionic and borderline personality disorder. She was left with strangers as a kid and may have been molested. In the end, it was thought that she was creating these incidents for attention -her hand was stabbed in such a way the nothing vital was hit, and she was a nurse. The theory is she went too far when she died. People now know she did it herself but they don’t know if she meant to die or just set up another abuse scenario. This was also in Canada.

It reminded me of Kelly, although the cases aren’t alike-the fear of abandonment and need for attention and care seem similar, and how very far some go to get that need met. But it never can be met for long and my limited understanding of borderlines is they can’t be cured. So it makes sense that Kelly would comply in hospital and then go back to old ways as soon as she can.

I wonder if we’ll see more from her?

Is she really doing it for attention any more? She's been off the internet for some time, and the videos that surfaced to re-start this thread were smuggled out from somewhere, they're not anywhere where most people could find them. Clearly her family have formed the conclusion that she thrives off attention and have lumberjacked her internet, showing that at least by now they're more than aware of what's going on. Maybe, given her now quite severe disabilities, she's in some kind of group home or other institution, but wherever she is they still can't stop her slowly pulling her entire body apart. Therefore we can conclude:

1 - She is being deliberately starved of attention
2 - Everyone is on to her by now

And yet it continues. This is such a bizarre and extreme case that Munchausen's doesn't seem to fit any more, at least not on its own. It may have started off that way but there is something else, something rarer and more extreme, at play now. When she finally gives herself sepsis and dies, there will be scientific papers written about her. They may want to autopsy her brain to find out what the fuck was even going on in there, maybe something physical like encephalitis or a tumour causing such an extreme psychiatric illness. This is not a normal case, and it won't have a normal cause.

Kelly has always preferred irl attention over internet attention. She has regularly disappeared and reappeared for a long time, and when she reappears it is always tied to a decline in irl attention. She often goes online as a way to try to get her sister's attention especially and will lie about her sister to try and get a reaction. It was predicted that once she got her legs removed the high of having her care team, physical therapists, and family's attention would keep her satiated for a while, which it did, then she emerged when she was supposed to be living more independently and using her wheelchair more. Then she went silent again and comes back now with fresh picking wounds and even more of her legs gone. As long as her family and her medical team keep feeding the beast she will keep going, and she'll only turn to the internet when she has to. Though I think a small part of it is that many people online know who she is and her game and so she can't get away with playing the innocent suffering ballerina like she used to in the early days.

I try not to learn much about Medicare because my generation is just going to get thrown into a woodchipper instead, but this is not completely accurate. If you're 65 and still covered by health insurance through your job or your spouse's job, you enter a Special Enrollment Period and don't have to sign up to Medicare until after you leave that job (or cancel that job-based health insurance).

You only get Medicare automatically if you're getting Social Security before age 65, otherwise you have to actively sign up. If you fuck up and/or forget, there's a penalty for doing it late.

The subreddit was wiped clean. Hi Kelly!

‘Why doesn’t her family make her stop?’

I keep seeing this pop up again and again. This website is full of idiots who’s family couldn’t help them. Kelly has picked her legs off, there’s no family in the world that can make her stop unless they chain her up with leather mittens on and they’re the ones who would go to jail for that.

She is is irreparable.

The only thing her family will feel when Kelly finally dies is relief. She is nothing but a burden to everyone and everything around her.

If family could make people turn off the crazy, this place wouldn’t exist. Its not their fault, it’s Kelly’s.

In one of the new videos, Kelly inhaled a drug that she said reduces fever. She had what appeared to be a damp towel on her forehead, which is usually applied when there is a fever. There is a possibility that the fever is a symptom of sepsis.

I couldn't make out what she was saying through her toothless mouth, but I felt I should correct the record here. She wasn't inhaling a drug, she was actually using an incentive spirometer. It's a device used to help expand the lungs and reduce atelectasis & pneumonia (which bedbound patients are prone to).

What's hilarious is that Kelly is using it incorrectly. You're supposed to take slow, deep breaths, maintaining the piston between certain markers. Instead she just rips it (you see the piston shooting straight up). So she's getting no actual benefit from the device. Maybe she's had too many bong hits, and muscle memory has taken over. Or her scrambled egg brains can't follow simple directions.

In Ontario at least, the 72 hour hold is called a Form 1, and it only counts as a detainment and assessment, no treatment. During that 72 hour hold, the patient can be upgraded to a 2 week hold, called a form 3, if it’s issued by a separate doctor from the one that issued the Form 1. There is still no forced treatment allowed. When that expires, if a doctor finds them a danger to themselves or someone else it can be extended with a Form 4 to hold them even longer. But it’s very very hard to force someone to accept treatment, if a viable treatment even exists for someone as far through the cracks as Kelly. They just warehouse them and turn them loose.

(If you’re curious, a form 2 is when someone is concerned about you and takes steps to have the police apprehend you to be evaluated. That evaluation leads to a form 1 or release.)

Now that she has removed her teeth, she will be on a soft food and liquid diet, which will not change if she induces an oral infection
I'm honestly rather surprised she hasn't gone the typical munchie route of forcing herself onto some kind of feeding tube, which she could not only tamper with but would also mean her mouth is free real-estate.

I bet it becomes it’s own reward and reinforcement after a while. The initial reason becomes irrelevant. They get so consumed by it, it becomes their entire existence, the habit become engrained, and it’s almost impossible to stop,
@Poop Shoot is right. Her family cannot help her. I would bet that they have tried for years and gone through hell with it. After a while they do t exactly give up but they realise they cannot have any kind of positive effect and they change behaviour. They have to becasue you cannot love like that, with constant mad dashes to hospital or the police round, or in constant crisis. It makes you sick and it doesn’t help them and eventually you realise you can do nothing and then negative preventative type feedback loops stop too - stuff like family being angry/disgusted etc. can stop people for a bit only
Kelly horrifies me. There is no family intervention that works. They are like a black hole - you can pour love and attention in and it never helps, it just burns out the family.
In the uk it’s almost impossible to have someone committed if they’re at all lucid. Even if they’ve tried to kill themselves or hurt themselves. They just get assessed and released.
It may sound crazy but I can see why people used to think demons possessed people. There’s a point dealing with someone like this where that becomes a plausible thoight

I'm guessing it's like any other form of self-injury and she gets the dopamine rush from the pain while better adjusted people get it from sex or exercise or just a really good pizza. Given how long she's been at it, and the astonishing severity, I'm gonna go out on a limb (lol) and say this is the only way her broken brain knows how to produce the feel good chemicals.

I don’t think it's beneficial to apply "normal" psychological reaction to Kelly. Self-injury isn't typically an escalating behavior; meaning people who cut don't cut deeper and deeper over a prolonged period of time until they start hitting bone, etc. Nor do they typically seek out new ways to self harm.

I really hope when Kelly finally dies her brain will be donated to science so someone might be able to look for an infection or abnormality or IDK something. Her behavior is somewhat close to outlier examples of early onset dementia patients. I've even thought it might resemble something like CTE, but CTE in women is so rarely studied it can't be internet diagnosed.
