Honestly reminds me of the first deal office job I ever had. My desk was right outside my boss’s office, so I would often hear his phone calls. He has this way of being super friendly and casual towards someone, asking personal questions and establishing trust, then he’d flip the switch and be this menacing terror who can’t be appeased to ensure he got what he wanted. The man was downright terrifying but it taught me a lot about how manipulation works and I definitely see a lot of similar tactics attempted by Nick, just less competently pulled off.

Except those people experienced in office politics actually manipulate people day and night for years while Rekieta only managed to fool middle aged women who fried their brains with anti depressants or benzos. The odd thing with the Rackets is how little connection they seem to have locally. Obviously there are people orbiting Balldoman who care about Kayla, but are there really any for Nick? And Kayla has local family whereas Nick's family is in Florida or Texas now. But usually people who run in their circles (home schooling, church, community theater, at one point chamber of commerce) have some friends they keep up with. But not the Rackets. It's so odd.
