Brittleness comes from cooling. Most likely they were running the machines too fast on the T-34's, and wernt fully cleaning the slag away. Unless you dump.a bucket of water on it and don't let it air cool (which would HARDEN the shit out of it), it's just improper procedure.

Hardness /generally/ correlates with brittleness and while yeah you're not gonna end up with the coffin nail 65 rockwell of water quenching while glowing red there's flame hardening results you can get from something like D3 where you'll end up around 50 rockwell just letting it mostly idly come down to room temperature. I also recall chemically the reds were primarily alloying with moly and nickel and trying to use as much moly and little nickel as they could like they were short nickel; high molybdenum content in austenitic steels weakens the lattice iirc, would exaggerate an air hardened stress riser that probably shouldn't be an issue. Ultimately I do agree there was a duck fucked somewhere in process and in that time period I tend to lean toward heat treat/heat control issues ala Springfield and their exploding receivers.

Heat treat could definitely have lead to issues, as T-34's were made in a rush. I still stand by possible slag inclusions, I've seen the damage that can do, and it definitely could have caused cracks if they didn't clean it out properly after each pass.

If Kalashnikov's prototype was ignored, then why then hell was he recommended for service in the artillery directorate and further education on firearms? The Russians were in the middle of a serious war, if they didn't think he had anything valuable to contribute to the technical side of things they would've sent him back to the front lines. All of this is documented.
