Home Remedies, Folk Medicine, and Granny Cures - or what to do when you're feeling unwell

When spring comes back into play and you have pollen allergies, go buy some honey that's local to your area, and eat a spoonful when you get the sniffles.

I tried it this past spring and I didn't have to take any allergy meds the entire season. It was absolutely wonderful. I tried to look up why it worked and all I got from the interwebs is that it doesn't work. I was so frustrated at the lack of information but I will continue to eat my local bee vomit.

Unfiltered local honey will contain some of the local pollen that's setting off the allergies. Taking small amounts in that manner allows your immune system to learn that the pollen isn't a threat, and it can chill the fuck out on the reaction. Of course it's not perfect, but there's no harm in trying and worst case you're taking the allergy meds anyway.

Some apiaries do summer and fall honey also, if you have allergies during those seasons.

My grandma had a remedy for headache that I hated it:

  • 1 Glass of cola soda (coke preferably)
  • 1 Egg
Crack open the raw egg and put it on the glass of coke, do not break the yolk. As soon as it starts to fizz up, drink it all on one chug

I loved my grandma but this thing was the worst, as I always ended puking it shortly after

EDIT- Forgot to say that it works, but it leaves an aftertaste of raw egg in your mouth

I also hear that poppy petals (not seeds, petals) in a tincture help, but I haven’t tried it and can’t verify it. The person who told me is one who is trust on it thoigh and I might try it next year.
Local honey, and it has to be raw honey, does work but it’s a long term thing.

Okay so I really thought I posted in this thread before but I guess I didn't. Anyways-
Don't underestimate the power of honey. PURE HONEY, not honey as a ingredient to something else. JUST HONEY

* If you have a sore throat, take a spoonful (or two) of honey and swallow it, the thickness of the honey and the stuff inside of honey will naturally help soothe your throat. It works better than sore throat medicine IMO
* Honey masks are a thing! If you want to look younger and clean away dirt and makeup particles, use a honey mask! Honey will help get rid of the dirt and clean your pores AND make you look younger if you do it at least, once or twice a week. (You can also use natural honey on your face but make sure you clean it off before you go to bed or whatever because it can catch debris and then cause a breakout.)
* If you were an alcoholic, use acacia honey! Based upon sources, it's a natural remedy to help repair the damage of your inner stomach lining from alcohol abuse.
* If you want to eat something sweet but you're on a diet.... ya you guessed it. Honey. Clover honey is super sweet and it's natural. No bullshit included!

Honey + salt = honey scrub for skin (and good for keratosis pilaris, too)
Honey + ginger = Cold tea
Honey + onion + garlic in a jar = Cold medicine

Whenever I fell ill from the stomach, my mom makes a tea with hierba santa (mexican pepper leaf) and honey for taste. It always works to make me feel better.
Have you tried Cola de Caballo? It also helps when you can't get Hierba Santa

I have a few questionable suggestions that someone might find worth trying.

1 - Not long ago, when I had a very upset stomach, I ate a bunch of cantaloupe and it actually made me less nauseous after. (I know that this is kind of an inaccessible solution though, since cantaloupe is seasonal and doesn't grow everywhere.)

2 - If you struggle with constipation, drink green tea with mint and you might start pooping again! I use tea bags that are a blend of sencha and maccha, although I don't think the type matters. After the water has started boiling, I just throw in 2-3 sprigs of mint. It won't change the color of the tea at all, but if the mint flavor doesn't come through when you drink it, you either put the mint in too late or didn't steep it long enough. You would have to drink the tea on a daily/regular basis, but it shouldn't be long before your digestive system kicks back into gear.

3 - If you have a cold and you get nasal congestion problems, eat spicy chips. The mucus will break up, and your nose will start to run.

4 - Supposedly there's an acupuncture point on the top of your head and, if you rub/massage it while you're feeling drowsy, you'll wake back up a bit. I heard this advice from a hipstery woman I used to know, and it honestly doesn't work for me, but I figure if it works for her it might for other people as well.

Anything spicy in general tends to do this and I can't recommend it enough. Relatedly I'd say that if you feel depressed you should add more spices (chilis/peppers) in your diet. You don't need to set your mouth on fire constantly, but even a little bit can give you a mood boost.

TMI time. And sorry if this has been posted,
If you feel a yeast infection coming on, get a warm damp cloth and salt it. Press it to the outside of your nethers. It might burn a bit, but leave it on for at least a minute or two if you can and don't get it inside any holes. Rinse off thoroughly. Gets rid of itch way better than any meds I've tried and the infection goes away faster. I'm assuming the salt kills the yeast or something. Sounds insane but I swear by it. Always follow up with actual meds to properly control it though.

I haven't but I've heard good things about it.

Another strange remedy my mom used to make was some sort of liquid made with thyme. If I ever had a throat infection, I had to mix it with water and mouthwash for a minute. It felt like I was gargling soap, even huge bubbles would come out of my mouth. But, holy shit, it always worked.

Krupnik (a mixture of grain alcohol boiled with raw honey, peppercorns, cloves, cinnamon sticks, vanilla pods, and lemon zest) in a cup of hot tea. Baba swore by it, even when we were kids.

that sounds like Christmas flavored Riot Punch and I am here for it

While we're on the subject, my boss used to make me what he called a grog, he'd pick whatever alcohol was high in stock and mix it with hot water, lemon, cloves, honey, black pepper, ginger, and sometimes rosemary. One time, we only had Frangelico in high stock and it was repugnant lmao, can't recommend that one. Pastis or dark, plain liquor was fine.
