To Build Ships That Break Ice, U.S. Must Relearn to Cut Steel​

PASCAGOULA, Miss.—A $13.3 billion program to safeguard American interests in the Arctic has run aground on an old industrial challenge: cutting and shaping thick, hardened steel.

U.S. officials are racing to procure new polar icebreakers because one of only two that the Coast Guard now sails has reached the end of its life, and the one assigned to the Arctic is out of service for maintenance every winter. Delivery of the first new icebreaker has slipped to 2028 from 2024 as designers, engineers and welders grapple with something the U.S. hasn’t done in decades: reliably shape hardened steel that is more than an inch thick into a curved, reinforced ship’s hull.

By comparison, Russia has three dozen national icebreakers suitable for the Arctic, according to the U.S. Coast Guard, and China has four, including two icebreaking research ships that regularly appear at high latitudes. U.S. officials suspect those have strategic purposes. Beijing says science is driving its Arctic ambitions.

A spokesperson from the LAPD said in a statement to ABC News that a radio call was generated around 4:30 p.m. local time reporting a man with "a loaded gun in a shoulder holster and a badge stating he was a U.S. Marshal." LAPD officers arrived shortly after and arrested the man. The FBI was also present at the scene.

The LAPD said the man never brandished the gun or threatened anyone.

Adrian Paul Aispuro, 44, was identified Saturday as the suspect, according to booking details reviewed by ABC News. Aispuro is currently being held in Los Angeles on $35,000 bail for a felony charge of carrying a concealed weapon.

FWIW we've had jets that can take off, fly a sortie, drop bombs, return home and land without human intervention since the 80's.

  • Dropping bombs without human intervention or final command is against the geneva convention/general war rules.
  • Landing and taking off automatically destroys run-ways because it's too accurate.
  • The main reason commercial flights have pilots is for the idiot meat-bags on board who feel safer seeing a human flying a machine, not a machine.
  • 95% of all aircraft fatalities come down to human error. Most of which are pilots not reacting correctly to the rule of "put the autopilot on and for fuck sake get off the stick"

The vast majority of Russia's coastline is in the arctic, whereas the US only has to contend with Alaska. They have never been a priority for the US. Canaderp also has 17 ice breakers for the same reason.

Gee I wonder why THAT is... It can't be because the people that work in retail now are complete fucking mongoloids that don't know their elbows from their ass, or that they just don't give a single fuck about doing their job properly, right?

Why the fuck would anyone go to any chain store anymore when making simple purchases have now become miserable events? It's even worse when the self-checkout machines decided to just bug out on you and it takes like 10 minutes to scan 2 items because jamal and/or shaniqua can't figure out why the credit card machine is claiming an error on your card when it works with everything else you use the card for.

There's definitely a "break-point" happening in retail.
Soda has been marked at $8 a 12-pack for 18 months, and not moving.
Suddenly it's "half-off" (back to 2018 prices) and the shelves are empty.

The next shoe to drop is probably beef.
The movement of beef at my local market has been so bad the entire section is as small today as the Lamb section was in early 2019.
I know I sure as fuck am not paying $12 for basic bitch steak or $5/lb for fucking ground chuck.
Most people aren't buying chicken breast either due to price.
The thighs get cleaned out and then nothing moves.
