Most (smart) people use (or used) /pol/ like a news aggregator. The thought process is as follows:

>Link? if not, fake, disregard
>If link, verify official account
>Verify if context matches what OP says

>Article
>Source? if not, fake, disregard
>What site is it from? Does it show up on google?

>Chart is posted
>What's missing from the data? Source? Link to associated raw data? Study?
>Verify if context matches what OP says

>Slide/bait thread
>sage, ignore.

I assume people use A&N the same way. If you do this, it's actually a pretty good way to get the quickest, closest-to-the-ground info on current events. I'd usually be the first one in my friend group with info on active happenings using this method.

Not knowing this is how you're supposed to do it might be the reason why people don't understand /pol/ and thus don't understand A&N. Most of the time you really shouldn't actually be posting in the threads.

It poses no material advantage, it doesn't make it easier to get along with people irl.

In fact if you look at the people who browse places like pol, or A&N frequenters, chronic twitter users, etc. you might get the impression that not only doesn't keeping up to date on this information provide any advantage, it actually leads to people being much more angry, depressed, and antisocial on average.

It looks like nothing but a compulsive habit, which people excuse under the guise of "staying informed".

Not to be rude, but who cares?

Those people want to stay up to date on current events, other people on this site want to stay up to date on Amberlyn's weight, and others still want to know who last saw Chris-chan IRL.

It's all how people choose to use their time here, and just because you don't see the value in it, doesn't mean it's not interesting or not worth doing.

And I'd say, strictly speaking, knowledge of current events is a little bit more likely to be useful IRL than whatever Cyrax said on stream last week.

Most people never read beyond the headlines, aside from maybe the first couple of sentences. Journalists know this too which is why every headline is written obnoxiously: they want to get their message out there knowing they won’t read it but need the clicks anyway.

I find bitching about A&H far more annoying than the board itself. I suspect a lot of fags do it because their brilliant and scorching hot takes were either annoyed, given a thunkful rating which seems to piss off a lot of people, or gets shot down by others. The internet has become such an echochamber that people truly no longer know what it’s like to be in a forum or any kind of online space that consists of people with different opinions than their own.
