The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they will step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent.

In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan also said they plan to split their time between the UK and North America.

The BBC understands no other royal - including the Queen or Prince William - was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is "disappointed".

Senior royals are understood to be "hurt" by the announcement.

In their unexpected statement on Wednesday, also posted on their Instagram page, the couple said they made the decision "after many months of reflection and internal discussions".

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

They said they plan to balance their time between the UK and North America while "continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages".

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said discussions with the duke and duchess on their decision to step back were "at an early stage", adding: "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

The couple's announcement on Wednesday comes two months after the Duke of York withdrew from public life after a BBC interview about his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in August.

this is something i never understood and still don't understand. what made people obsess over her so much, why was she loved and adored by so many? as far as i know she never did anything notable aside from marrying a prince, and other women who married british princes later (camilla and kate middleton) didn't attract the kind of cultish devotion that diana had, so it can't be just that.

I think her love story had a fairytale air to it at the time: Young, sweet, shy, beautiful girl is courted by royal prince and future king. I'm not Bri'ish so I don't know what their attitude towards the BRF was at the time, but it seems like people weren't as cynical about the BRF as they are now, so they were willing to believe the fairytale. I think the magic of the monarchy and royal marriage largely dissipated after Diana's fairytale marriage went to hell, and this is partially why Kate's relationship isn't romanticized in the same way.

As for Camilla, Charles was cheating on Diana with her during their marriage, so Camilla was always the villain. (Many people still despise Camilla to this day for it.)

So why people adored Diana: the "fairytale royal romance story", her glamour and innocent-seeming personality. And probably most of all the times she used her intense media spotlight to highlight humanitarian issues:

Diana was not the perfect angel people believed her to be, but she did do an enormous amount of good by bringing attention to issues like these and supporting charities. She was genuinely compassionate towards the suffering (comforting people in need helped her feel better when her own private life was a shitshow), and people loved her for it.

Her crazy behavior in private wasn't known to the public, and as Steam Deck said she died before her reputation could be ruined by it.

Meghan Markle is "clinging" to her royal title "for dear life" with an expert tearing apart her chances of making a stunning move into US politics or even the White House.

Some commenters are suggesting it's because MM was planning to cover the supposed moon bumps (and possibly surrogacy conspiracy).

I don't buy the surrogacy claim. If there was concrete evidence of it I would, but it sounds like wishful thinking on the part of Meghan's more deranged alogs.
I can believe she used moon bumps to enlarge her stomach though. She was always caressing the damn thing (which royal women aren't supposed to do), and it seemed like she got off on the whole "I'm PREGNANT with a ROYAL BABY!!!!" pulp fiction romance shtick. Royal pregnancies are one of those things people take more interest in, so besides the constant grievancewhoring I think being pregnant was one of the few things she could rely on to draw the media spotlight. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly less than impressed with the recent “Family Guy” episode that mocked the runaway royals.

Sources close to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex claim that the pair have labeled the “savage” episode as an “outrageous slur,” according to Closer magazine.

The couple found themselves the butt of the joke in a recent episode of the series, in which their money-hungry ways were mercilessly mocked by the animated show.

The pair, who quit royal life in 2020, have been feeling like “they’re not being taken seriously enough by people” and that they “can’t catch a break,” the source adds.

“Meghan said she won’t be humiliated like this and is desperate for a solution. They’re in full panic mode,” a source told the outlet, adding that the couple has called it an “attack from inside Hollywood.”

“What’s hit them hardest and cuts the deepest of all is that it plays up the whole notion they’re self-entitled grifters or spoilt brats,” the insider added.

Elsewhere, the source said that the “Suits” alum believes the only way for them to save their struggling brand is for Harry to “swallow his pride and beg for his family’s forgiveness.”

The Post has reached out to reps for the Sussexes for comment.

The episode in question roasted the couple over their Netflix deal, rumored to be worth $100 million, and showed Peter Griffin (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) on an adventure to become a TV extra to make money.

“I’ll go it alone, just like Meghan Markle and Prince Harry,” he says.

The scene then cuts to animated versions of Harry and Meghan, lounging by a pool, when their butler comes with a stack of envelopes.

The jab from the “Family Guy,” which was created by writer, actor and comic Seth MacFarlane and first aired in 1999, is eerily reminiscent of recent comments made by Spotify CEO Bill Simmons, who referred to Meghan and Harry as “f–king grifters.”

This isn’t the first time the couple has been a punchline at the expense of an animated series.

Just eight months earlier, Comedy Central’s long-running hit show South Park trashed the royal couple in an episode titled “The Worldwide Privacy Tour.”

She was never going to be a cornerstone of anything related to the royal family, other than gossip rags. She was never wanted, did not and never would fit in to the family. She's middle aged, divorced, an actress of all things and black. The only reason harry was allowed to have anything to do with her at all was politics and public relations. The queen was smart enough to know about the hit pieces that would follow with all kinds of racism accusations and such and wanted no part of it. So she was told to keep her mouth shut, act the part and not cause any problems or fuck with the family. She did none of that and went out of her way to not only stir the pot but manipulate harry into doing the same and turning him against the family. Now, it's been revealed that while Harry is keen for him and his wife to "stand on their own two feet," a reconciliation could work in their favour.

"Meghan and Harry are in panic mode and it's becoming clearer and clearer that their royal currency is dwindling which is having a knock-on effect on their Hollywood careers," a source told Closer.
