They were not the only ones there, and there is more to than "the Jews". The Samaritans, for example, are also Semites and claim to be Israelites but are not considered Jews due to a schism between them and the Judeans.

You should really read up on the history of the place; there are still serious disagreements between Ashkenazim, Sephardim, Mizrahim and even Yemenite Jews to this day.

Edit: Hasidim are also creating a lot of issues and of course there are Jews for Jesus. It is not simple nor will there be easy answers. Palestinians are often Jews who converted to Islam or Christianity millennia ago, so their claim can't be easily dismissed.

The Jews refused to respect Caesar as a god or some shit, and the Romans destroyed their kingdom and started calling it "Palestina" to spite them.

Some Jews did stay in the area, but most fled Roman oppression over the centuries to constitute the Diaspora.
In the 1800s most of "Palestine" was wasteland. Jews began moving there and buying garbage property from Arab landlords, often at exorbitant prices.
After the war in 1948, when the Arab world told the Arab inhabitants of Israel to vacate so that they wouldn't be caught up in the violence, Israel didn't let them "come home" after Israel won, and I don't blame them.

I wrote this in 5 minutes from memory, but it exhibits more knowledge of history than a lot of the posts here.

tbf those were, and still are, almost always Eastern European Jews; Ukrainian refugee women complain they are literally accosted at the airport in Israel the moment they step off the plane by sex traffickers who are also Ukrainian Jews.
