The problem for Hamas is that at this point not even releasing all hostages would work. They somehow designed a perfect storm to fuck themselves.
Unfortunately for the up to a thousand innocent civilians in Gaza there is no way out.

I don't think Hamas cares. They want to kill jews and I don't think they've thought much further than that, nor the possibility of Iran using them as fodder prempting a bigger invasion

Someone intelligent helped Hamas do this, someone who was able to formulate an innovative combined arms attack strategy. Israel's furious response is exactly what most would expect of them, which suggests that Israel is playing into the hand of whoever actually masterminded this.
