I'll answer their torah based argument with a torah based argument.

Hamas and the Palestinians are what are known as Rodef (pursuer). A rodef is someone you know is on the way to kill someone else and was warned not to do it, once you warned him you are obligated to kill him in order to save another persons life. This is just to save someone else's life. We now established that if we know someone is going to kill someone else, we have the religious right to kill him once we warned him.

The Talmud says “If someone comes to kill you, rise up and kill him first.” You have a responsibility to protect yourself. We now established that you need to protect yourself.


Putting aside all their other arguments about Zionism, anti zionism, whatever (although it's worth noting that even traditionally anti zionist groups like the Satmar jews are now helping out Israel by donating supplies), we have a legitimate Halachic reason to go to war in order to save lives and protect ourselves.
