I thought a iron pan was to never be washed. My friends grandma chewed me up for cleaning it while washing the dishes once.

If a cast iron pan is seasoned properly, a gentle wash or even a rinse isn't going to hurt it at all. Some people use salt to help clean it out but plain dish soap isn't going to destroy a good polymerized lipid surface layer all on its own. I use a chain mail scrubber and a quick hot rinse.
