They can, but it is a very high bar on a civil case that has like a hundred percent chance of being appealed, the standard is usually to the effect that "no reasonable jury which understood the evidence and instructions could come to this conclusion". The really funny thing is that you are defiantly not allowed to call jurors as witnesses to show any of that. In a criminal case they can only do it in favor of the defendant.

It's rare, but yeah. In a criminal trial a judge can overturn a jury if they determine their decision clearly doesn't align with the evidence given. Although this pretty much applies to guilty verdicts, they can't overturn a not guilty verdict. And in a civil trial they can overturn the verdict if it doesn't match the weight of the evidence or a law was misinterpreted to make the verdict.
