Depends on the jurisdiction. Some require an actual qualification. And they range from mostly secretarial to knowing more about the actual law than the lawyer they work for and even drafting actual suits, motions, demand letters, etc. although the lawyer has to sign off on it.

A lot of lawyers are rainmakers who barely give a fuck about legal theory and pass that off onto specialized paraprofessionals while focusing on schmoozing rich people likely to get in pricey legal trouble at some point. There are lawyers who do more of their business on the golf course than in court.

Just as examples: Russell Greer literally has a paralegal degree.

And Kevin LanDUI actually has a license to practice law.

There are plenty of paralegals who know more law than Dogbite.

Also legal secretaries in particular are often highly qualified, have to deal with a lot of technical language, and sometimes actually have a J.D. themselves. Don't assume the lack of a J.D. means lack of knowledge, or the possession of one means you aren't an idiot: case in point Nick.

And just to put it in practical terms, do you want to pay $1,000 plus an hour for a named partner to draft something he might not even be very good at or $250 an hour for a paralegal who is?

Wow, what a fucking asshole to say such a thing in an interview. That's a question I would expect a CNN reporter to ask. After I read his OP, it sure opened up my eyes about him. Nick being a trust fund kid explains a lot about his laziness and behavior. My point I'm trying to make is that Nick is a rare lolcow who started out with money.

From what I've seen of him (which is only a moderate amount), he strikes me more as someone giving in to acting gay rather than actually being gay. More like finnster than fuentes. Doing it for attention. Doing it because he thinks it pleases his wife. Doing it because it's "fun".
