People just now discovering she's voiced Su from Love Hina are absolutely hysterical, and further proof they were never anime fans like Wendee is.

She's also voiced lesbian icons, too. Clearly this mad woman must be stopped.

I hate how Anairis is basically the defacto politically correct "dark-skinned/vaguely black looking anime character" voice casting choice now. She voices Nessa from Pokemon and Miriko from MHA for that very reason. This kind of voice casting only ever applies to dark skinned characters, it never applies to the other 99% of light-skinned Japanese characters that are actively dubbed by white and otherwise non-asian actors. Hell, they never apply the same logic to the original Japanese production, Yoruichi is voiced by a Japanese woman despite supposedly being black (there are black actors in Japan, and black Japanese speakers they could fly over too, right?).

If these rules were applied universally, the western anime industry would have maybe only 10 actors total. Even VAs like Kaiji Tang (Chinese) and Aleks Le (Vietnamese) that fit under the western "asian" monolith umbrella aren't specifically Japanese.

The voice actor of Chad (Mexican-Japanese character in Bleach) cucked out and let the role get taken from him due to his politics.

Wendee Lee probably raised enough of a fuss that she got her role back because she simply doesn't give a fuck about social graces. I think her tweets come from a place of somewhat hurt, because people in the industry celebrated her getting recast, but didn't celebrate her getting the role back despite being Yoruichi's voice for almost 20 years.

But as with all controversies on anime twitter, people are going to start digging through her past to see if they can smear her as an "abuser" or racist or otherwise. Some of these QRTs get really nasty and personal, insulting her age and everything else they can get at.

Here's a particularly pathetic post from Gianni Matragrano, one of the most soy-filled internet VAs to ever live who got a vasectomy after Roe v. Wade was overturned to promote other men to get vasectomies in order to stop rape culture despite him being a married man with a wife:

This idiot basically proved Wendee's point, people feel that her being cast as Yoruichi, a dark-skinned woman (which automatically equals black I guess) was a long-standing mistake, and are smearing her as a racist because she supposedly has racists on her side defending her (because you can control who supports you and who doesn't).

Wendee personally reached out to Anairis to apologize:

Also that Michael Edwards guy was who I was talking about earlier, I think. Posted a pic of Wendee and the brown characters she voiced and everyone recoiled like it was some horrendous thing. I'm ready for this racial VA bullshit to be over now...

I don't think it'll ever really go away. It came at the height of the BLM bullshit in 2020 and it provides an easy PR win.

He sounds so hard like a sanctimonious piece of shit from this post. He raised a lot of my alarms of useful idiot when he started making a fuss about Tara Strong, and how he wants a big time VA to call her out for the war*. It's people like this fuck why the industry is long overdue for a implosion, or a game changing event as a wake-up call.

*Sidenote, don't like Strong either, but I hate types like Micheal where they act like they are doing good when they are adding to the problem

Wendee Lee is an overrated VA (not bad necessarily but, hey, you know...) and one of those iconic of how incestuous the U.S. dubbing industry is, she was inescapable in dubs produced during the 1990s and 2000s. That said, if my co-workers acted like me taking up a role I did before is fundamentally wrong I'd be more than a little put off, too, and maybe lacking in diplomacy and tact in my responses.

Lmao I would be surprised if Wendee doesn't get blacklisted. Who is this Michael Edwards because he will probably be blacklisted if she keeps her job.
 
from what i've seen, Anairis doesn't seem too offended by the whole thing? at least from what i've seen on twitter, but these people are acting like she's been crying in a corner or something.
