Reylo is a Big Thing namely because back in ye olde days (2018 tumblr, lol), it was such a fucking big deal. people against Reylo saw it as being 'problematic' because it was abusive and rapey and had problematic power dynamics because Kylo is the big bad and Rey is just a girlboss trying to live her life. on top of that, it was also STRAIGHT. this meant that all those bad things were even worse, partially because this was the peak era for annoying pooners and fujos shitting on anything 'cishet', but also because it was a man being horrible to a woman in canon and then people 'romanticising' that. Reylo antis argued that the dynamic between Kylo and Rey in fiction was reflected by those who enjoyed it in real life - that they agreed with it and wanted it to happen to them. this was literally the basis for the whole 'anti-ship' movement that wholly believes fiction = reality, even though they were literally fighting over a gay space opera where people use glow-in-the-dark sticks to fight. much to consider.
(as an aside, it was also slightly ironic because at the same time, the Hannibal TV show was getting big in fujo spaces. this meant that there was a huge explosion of fics and fanart and whatever of Hannibal/Will content. you know... Hannibal, the shitty therapist who fucking eats people and tries to kill Will. while there was some disk horse surrounding Hannigram's popularity, it wasn't as crazy as it was for Reylo, which didn't go unnoticed by a lot of the women writing Reylo shit mostly because they wanted to fuck Adam Driver.)
back then, 'Reylos' were pretty much normal shippers. some wrote fix-it fics where Kylo wasn't evil or where he turned good or whatever. lots of your regular bland fluffy fic. over the years, though, since they've sort of realised that no matter what they do, they'll be accused of supporting/romanticising rape, abuse, etc, the fandom has gotten a lot edgier. there are still a lot of women who write the Reylo of old - boring, safe alternate universe fics where Kylo Ren is the sexy CEO of a big company and Rey is his assistant and they have sexy sex on conference tables, that kind of shit - but now there are also a lot of women who write more offensive stuff with things like non-con, rape, Stockholm syndromey tropes, all that kind of stuff.
so, I think that's partially the reason why Staph is so into it, and mentions it so consistently - that, and the fact she's still stuck on thinking of Reylo as the face of proship pairings. I think she also 'identifies' as a Reylo, specifically using that word, because she's incapable of just liking things like a normal fucking person. everything has to be an identity for her. however, what I always think is funny when she mentions Reylo is the fact that I'm pretty sure she's mentioned that she used to be a Reylo anti herself - probably because she is the embodiment of fat white girls on tumblr.co.edu.com.gov whinging about 'cishet' shit.
