It's fall. Maples and birch have mostly dropped their leaves and oaks are on the way. Even a small signature could tip off an operator. There are not a ton of natural features common in the Maine woods that could conceal him from the air. His best bet would be a dense thicket of pine or something he prepared. His car is not particularly far from the town he's reported to have lived in. He could have literally run home after he ditched his car.Thermals are great, but it only works if there's a direct line-of-sight. If he bunkers down in the trees, he'll still disappear. A K9 could still smoke him out, if he didn't bug out in a boat or car. This long after the shooting, he's probably long gone now, though.
It will be difficult to find him if he isn't gone. That area is not bumfuck nowhere like up north, but there are plenty of woodlots and I'm sure more than a couple abandoned houses.
That was my first thought as well.Sounds like either echo or a binary trigger.
