After some reconsideration I have concluded that Nick is actually smart and right about everything and that Null is cringe and gay. Nick Rekieta is much cooler than Null, he even owns a cool sports car while Null is bumming it on the bus. Was Null's plan legally sound? I dunno. Maybe not. INAL (and Nick barely is). I'm also not not clear on the technical details here.

However, I'm doubtful there were any nefarious intent behind what he was trying to accomplish. Null has been a HELL of a lot more consistent about how he feels about CP/CSAM than Rekieta has. There's also no evidence Null hanged onto the uncensored images when hashing them, so Nick doesn't seem to have any point here at all other than trying to aggro Null.

Hashing is basically an algorithm that converts a file to a string of text based on a very complex calculation. If you change the file at all then that file will return a different string when run through the same algorithm. The idea is to gather hashes for CSAM for automatic comparison to all files uploaded to a server. It's also commonly used to verify the authenticity of a specific file in higher security settings.

I think the compression being discussed here is deliberately destructive. It is designed to create an identical image from similar images thus avoiding the "one pixel changed" ofuscation of hashing. That identical image is then hashed and blacklisted as opposed to the many similar images.

It's an algorithm that converts a file (in this case, an image or video) to a string and stores it, the actual file isn't stored just the string of alphanumerical text.
Then with future uploads, the file is compared to stored, known strings of nasty stuff and instantly rejected.

YouTube uses this with propaganda videos such as "The Greatest Story Never Told", try uploading that and watch it get instantly flagged.
China's Internet uses this with photos they don't like, such as the famous Tiananmen Square tank photo/video and propaganda material from Falungong.
