omg it's a real thing. I didn't know what a "Peloton" was, so I had to look it up. Exercise bikes aren't exactly a high-IQ proposition in the first place (surely you can bike outside unless you live in the Alaskan wilderness), but this is a $1,500–2,500 exercise bike with a $44 monthly subscription! Ha ha, what a retard indeed.

Pelotons are kinda dumb in my opinion but indoor bikes can be pretty cool if you have a smart trainer. You can simulate sprints or long climbs or whatever, which can be hard to do if you don't have safe places or appropriate terrain nearby. You don't have to worry about wind or traffic stops affecting your numbers. It's a great tool if you care about measuring performance. Peloton is more about spin classes at home than modeling actual rides, which I guess is fine if that's your thing. It'll still give you wattage info and heart rate and all that stuff.

John claiming to be a tech geek and hardcore athlete, I would've thought he'd go with a Stages or Wattbike or whatever and use Trainer Road or Zwift, but instead he goes with the most pedestrian fitness platform around.

You can also buy a barebones stationary bicycle for under $100 and use it while you watch TV without worrying about getting dirty (other than sweat) or your safety. A great cool-down before bed IMO.

At one point during the pandemic he was touting Peloton as the best possible stock pick out there and advising people to bail out of Tesla and whatever else for it because he claimed it was going to become one of the great technology companies.

He is flailing around continuing to say things he thinks are completely normal and reasonable (because they are normal and reasonable), because it still has not sunk in that the movement he tied his identity to has become insane. He doesn't grasp that no dissent is tolerated now, and that you must embrace the most extreme, maximalist version of whatever the Current Thing is, or you will be targeted and then shunned. He doesn't understand why his tweets are no longer received with widespread sympathy, and why he is being frozen out of larger and larger parts of the movement.

Possibly he never will understand, because the realization might be too painful. It would basically leave him with two choices: walk away from progressive politics altogether (likely not possible) or desperately try to get back in with the crowd via more self-flagellating and proclaiming the new progressive orthodoxy with all his might (probably wouldn't work either).
