Silent Hill

First the MGS collection and now this. Holy shit.
So after the lazy MGS collection and this clusterfuck, whatever little hope I had for the sh2 remake evaporated faster than you can say TRAUMA!
What's wrong with the MGS collection? I know there's stuff about framerates, but from what I hear they fixed a few issues from the HD collection, and implemented some features to account for the weird meta-hardware Kojima things (like the particularities around the Psycho Mantis fight)

The main thing is that is 60 bucks for having a glorified iso file that runs the barebones version of mgs1 and the other two having weird glitches with sound and image quality. You can emulate all 3 on pc with all the bells and whistles the collection should have come with for, again, 60 fucking dollars.

Honestly it's a bit overblown most of the bugs and glitches cited were in the original titles. Other than that the two biggest complaints I've heard are that whatever they used to upscale textures fucked up and made some textures blurrier than they should be and some platforms have an incredibly cringe "outdated content warning" trigger warning thing when you boot them up.

I had Ascension on my laptop while handing out candy last night. It was as much of a trainwreck as you'd imagine.

Highlights of the scummy business stuff:

- You have an avatar. It appears to just show your face. It's typical modern western dev body type A body type B stuff. It also defaulted me to being black. BHVR is a hyper woke company so this isn't surprising.

- Your avatar's face shows up in chat. The rest of the customizability is, I imagine, for your character model to cameo in the "show." Yes, the biggest whales have a shot at appearing in the show.

-They flat out lied about the game being pay2decide. You can buy the decision-making points in packs ranging up to 20 dollars. You also don't have access to as many opportunities to unlock more points without buying the 20 dollar battlepass.

-The activities they want you to do to get points range from 2000s era flash game level hidden object puzzles, to slow rhythm games where you play worse versions of Yamaoka songs.

- You get about 500 points per minigame, whereas the 20 dollar pack nets you 26k points.

- The game keeps popping up the battle pass when you navigate around. It really wants you to buy it.

Highlights of the stream itself:

- I had the chat open the whole time. I saw plenty of spamming of the "SHADY!" sticker, especially in the soy-filled pre-stream that was a bunch of dudes shilling the game. I never saw a single battlepass sticker, not even the bread meme one.

- Graphics are like a PS3 game, serious Until Dawn vibes. Makes it feel very low budget (which it probably is)

- The choice system already has a ridiculous amount dumped into one option, so it's barely worth interacting with.

- Story is forgettable horror cliches, barely anything to do with Silent Hill.

- There was a quicktime event sequence. It looked ridiculous, just a guy walking through a spooky haunted house while your typical big gross monsters that Western devs think are Silent Hilly chase him around. The chat failed each one horribly, and it clearly did nothing to change the story. At the end of it, it said that one of this character's stats went down.

- Judging from the weird stat system, I'm assuming this is going to be very on rails and there will be set points where the characters can die depending on their stats.

- Chat was 70% relentlessly mocking how cringe it all was, 20% people complaining that the mobile app doesn't work, and 10% reddit hand wringing over how rude people were being. Again, never saw a single premium emote or sticker, suggesting few if nobody bought the battlepass.

It can't be overstated how much this screams they know they have a flop on their hands are trying to recoup some costs out of it. They wouldn't have waited to fully announce what it was until launch day if they were confident in it. It was clear they were trying to hide that it was a buy-your-own-adventure for months. It's absurd they're expecting people to tune in for 6 straight months.

I have a feeling Konami wanted this to be a side thing that got lost in the noise of the other major releases, but we haven't heard a thing from anything else since last October. The real eternal torment, it appears, is being a Silent Hill fan.

Honestly, I’m able to turn off one of the two brain cells in my head in order to just enjoy things most of the time. I checked it out on a VOD, though, and when I saw one of the choices was way ahead of all of the other ones because a single voter dropped like ten times the amount of points that everyone else had, it made me wonder if the devs animated just one storyline and are inflating the votes. Not sure how much it really matters though since a bunch of the app is broken. I don’t understand why Konami, etc. don’t just make a shit ton of money and give fans of older IPs what we want, all it takes is a quick vibe check on social media. At least people are posting slurs in the unmoderated chat.

Edit: they added candy crush to Silent Hill.

Wow, I heard virtually NOTHING about this "game" launching yesterday. I can't believe they turned Silent Hill into Twitch Plays Until Dawn. Playing through the fan-made Silent Hill 2 Remastered right now and it's excellent. Such a shame that Konami can't let this franchise stay dead. They botched it royally almost ten years ago with the remastered collection and they're doing it again now. Maybe I'll give that fan-remake of P.T. a try after Silent Hill 2.

Is Silent Hill like a big thing in Brazil?

I keep seeing these Brazilian mutts spamming "jogo como seu jeuga", "kkkkkkkkkk", etc on the Ascension's chat.

I'm not aware of it being a thing in Brazil. I highly suspect there's a lot of botting going on.

Aye I'll give you that. I'm so used to just pirating shit that I tend to forget about prices in the equation. Yes, 60 is too much, even with the extras and fixes.

Eh, I'll take that over censorship or content changes to suit modern audiences.

Coincidentally right when I read your message, in a VOD of last night’s pre stream that I’m watching the CEO mentioned mass of signups in Latin America and the streamer said something about a “huge Silent Hill fandom in Brazil.” I can’t confirm this but it’s from Nubzombie who, for the most part, is accurate about Silent Hill things. I personally think massive Silent Hill fandoms are warranted, but I wonder why Brazil in particular has one.

Also, I don’t recommend the rest of the interview, unless anyone wants to see another executive demonstrate being out of touch with what people want in an IP. Notable moments include this guy making decisions based on how his 6 year old iPad baby interacts with mobile games.

That interview is so embarrasing its probably going to get memed to hell and back for years to come. the bearded soyman interviewer soyfacing at everything the konami spokesguy said, the smug condescending way he responds to all the criticism saying that its just the reddit community trolls, who are a few thousands, compared to the SH community who are millions. I think my apathy for the whole SH exhuming its turning to interest, just to see the whole Tom Hullet saga of devs who don't understand the IP they're working on and actively hate the fanbase repeat itself in 2023. This isn't going to make me buy any of this shit of course, probably just pirate the SH2 remake to laught at it but that's just about it.

I tuned out of the pre show after he said that iPad baby bullshit and I’m just sitting down for dinner and saw the thousands vs millions post show bullshit. It sounds like cope for a failure, because nothing says success like xeeting paragraphs explaining how your project is actually supposed to work. I don’t know how Konami hasn’t learned its lesson by now about licensing to relatively inexperienced developers. It makes me worry more about SH2R and Bloober, but I’m going to try to hold my expectations so I don’t get depressed about it too soon if it flops and the IP goes in the ground for another decade

Mostly that it’s a lazy port. Not a bad port from what I hear, but still a lazy port. Might as well just emulate at that point.
The CEO of Genvid, Jacob Navok, did an interview on the Ascension preshow:

(Sorry for the shitty image quality I’m taking photos of my tv from my couch and I’m too lazy to pull up the VOD on my device and take a proper screenshot

Seems the unhappy merchant is having a tough day:
I haven't seen all of it, but it's half an hour of blaming the system for "glitching out" and not letting them censor moderate the chat as intended

And blaming the community for not understanding the game, blaming the community for somehow arriving at the absurd idea that the monetization model is predatory, because we did it all this way so it would be fair; we totally don't want people buying points to just outweigh the free players and that's why we made the points packages small, if we wanted someone to buy a million influence points, we'd sell a million dollar package!
It's the community's fault they didn't realize the minigames that give points will indubitably give TONS AND TONS of points after the first few days of not giving much of anything. How can they be so foolish?

The guy's fucking eyes bulge out multiple times as he tries to bullshit the audience.

And it's only just starting, lads. It's supposed to be 8 months, yeah?

Also, apparently they got caught buying 5 star reviews on the Android Play Store.

I haven't confirmed it but I hear they hid the game in the iOS Store.

And now for some funny images:
