A few facts about Smiths Station.
Just over 5000 people, and about 1800 households. So a smallish town, insular, stable, a lot of people who live there have lived there all their lives. If everybody isn't in everybody else's business, I would be very surprised.
The only way the man would have had any peace is to move away, and given that he had cemented himself well into the infrastructure of the town: church and state, that would mean his whole life disappears.
That loss of status I think is what would have been a large part in his death. I cannot see him being allowed to continue in his role in the church, or as Mayor when this came out. He put himself in an untenable situation with his hidden life.
