RWBY - The Hindenburg on which Rooster Teeth rests its hopes, dreams and future

Ten minutes in.
So, in case you're wondering how they justify Team RWBY being 'needed' to combat the Grimm when most Justice League members outclass them; we have a scene of the Justice League barely being able to deal with normal Grimm (somehow, a giant scorpion sneaks up on mother fucking Batman) and telling each other how the Grimm are a worse threat than anything they've ever faced intercut with Ruby solo-ing Grimm with ease.

Also, Watts makes a Far Cry reference.

I'm no expert, but...

- The writing staff (and RoosterTeeth) does not own the RWBY IP. Even if they really really wanted to write volume 10, if WB says no then it's not going to happen. WB isn't looking to take any more massive losses and RWBY has almost no monetization model to speak of. They just keep rushing out extremely poor quality products (the RWBY games are dogshit, the merch is routinely awful). This isn't going to be fixed ever.

- On top of that - it's very clear that RoosterTeeth is living on borrowed time as a company. It's just a huge mess from top to bottom that's unsalvagable. Vol 9 being a filler season was a very large red flag that the current showrunners have no idea how pacing works.

- Volume 10 will either be the final volume (wherein all of the currently open threads are going to be hastily and shittly resolved like Game of Thrones Season 8 was) or will not be the final volume (and they will be right back here next year for Vol 11 issues). I'd estimate that a focused and satisfactory conclusion for RWBY would take a Vol 10, 11, and 12.

- Writing endings are extremely difficult even for talented writers and no one wants to be the next "shitty team that ruined <PROJECT>"

- RWBY is extremely slow paced and has been plodding around for a decade. Lot of other animes (HxH, MHA) have basically blown past RWBY in terms of pacing/plot progress and captured what would be RWBY's main audience.

- Most RWBY fans are ex-RWBY fans and are unlikely to come back for any reason. There is no reason to think RWBY will ever be good/passable again.

The best the RWBY core audience can hope for is that WB sees value in RWBY as an IP and does something with it when they shutter RoosterTeeth.

Overall, the movie is only slightly better than the first one, in that it feels like more is going on and I get to hear Watts again. Otherwise, it still has the same issues of bland fight scenes, the RWBY cast getting clear favouritism while the DC character, at best, get a joke at how silly and dumb comics are, the character arcs all feel rushed and superficial, the dialogue is even more stilted than you'd expect and nothing makes it feel like a true crossover story.

Rooster Teeth has two responses to criticism: Either they lampshade it with a dumb joke in-universe or they overcorrect to the extreme. People were complaining that Yang didn't seem to give a shit about her sister? Well, now we have Yang being out-of-nowhere over protective of Ruby fighting monsters they've killed hundreds of times. And Ruby has a 'character arc' about being less reckless.

There's technically multiple character arcs in this move, but like all RWBY character arcs they don't do more than insist it because nothing about this supposedly new attitude actually plays into their narrative struggles. Ruby's recklessly charging into battle, but this never fucks her over because none of the set ups offer any alternative other than doing nothing; Superman gives her a weak pep talk about not trying to join their dead parents and nothing changes. The Flash is haunted by being enslaved by Kilgore, but this means nothing other than angsting over it while he does everything he'd usually do; Yang gives him a weak pep talk about how losing her arm sucked too. Weiss is suddenly having an identity crisis over Atlas' destruction, but this just leads to her realizing that home is where the heart is.

You know why the GL and Jaune stuff in the last movie was almost decent? Not just because it was more than a pep talk, not just because it was two characters interacting and sharing interesting details they can relate to; but the development actually effected the story and characters. Their development was the key to them figuring out the digital world and how they could use it to their advantage.

Watts' grand return; escaping his death because he discovered how to store his consciousness on the interdimensional cyberspace in volume 7 and building himself a new body, with new weaponry and new appendages. He... Stands around, summons Grimm and yells how smart he is until Kilgore gets tired of him.

It really showcases how bland the Justice League sets are when you have Blake and Weiss looking at Gotham for two seconds, going 'Oh my god, it sucks so much, no wonder Batman is so depressing' while it looks like any other city map with none of the gritty and gothic architecture. The only direction for the DC assets were 'slightly futuristic, sterile metal rooms'.

Now, the Justice League have a direct door to go to Team RWBY's universe, they have an entire database of the different worlds in the multiverse and RWBY are currently in a hopeless battle against an immortal monster with little resources and no plan... Naturally, nobody asks if the Justice League can or have anything that can help.

Depends what you count. There's a moment where Jessica hopefully asks if Jaune's with them only to be depressed to find out he's not there, and when the League and RWBY take a picture together, Yang and Blake kiss. That's about it, Weiss and Ruby aren't even in the same room for most of the movie.

Also, is it just me, or does the VA struggle to maintain a "ruby" voice? I swear she couldn't keep it up to the end completely, and it was like only 30 seconds.
