I do think the whole devil thing was kinda meh. I much prefer that he's this remnant of a bygone age of utter savagery. The twee englishman comes to this far away corner of the world expecting to find people essentially no different from him; but instead encounters a merciless, brutal warrior. One with a keen understanding of his people, and is proud of the unflinching violence and depravity they engaged in. He's not the devil, he's a man from a period of time where there was so much carnage and bloodshed and suffering, that Jonathan Harker couldn't even imagine it.

Harker then brings that same utterly depraved monster back to his nice, civilised corner of the world. I think that's a lot more horrifying than the spectre of the devil. Like this part

where Dracula is reminiscing about all the people he's murdered and tortured and butchered. Talking about how the idea of peace, and nostalgia makes him disgusted.

Nobody mentions Hitler killing gypsies for the same reason nobody mentions how many mosquitoes he swatted in his life. Some actions are just universally morally justified.

Community infighting is the one thing he goes from zero to nuclear over. One minute there's just a bit of huffing and puffing, the next minute it's permabans. I've even taken a month-long ban for it, and I'm his best friend and personal hero.

Either way, people are gonna do what they're gonna do, I'm just explaining why I'm happy to use this thread to complain about women but think y'all should be a lot more temperate in using it to complain about those women.

Reading that she's an elderly homeless lady does tug at my heart strings. I get the rage, and if Freya's got weight issues she can't control, I could see how that would make you want to lash out online to feel like you have some agency. I hope they're able to find peace. Love trumps hate.

If one can go back in time, I would tell Hitler to not kill the Jews. The Jews at least have yummy deli food. Instead I would tell him to kill the gypsies. It will be nothing but a net positive in genociding them plus nobody will get mad.

Harker assumes they're gypsies when he sees them, but they also run away when they see that Dracula is a vampire, so it's kind of up in the air exactly who they were and what they were doing in the novel. Dracula notably has no servants in his castle. Which makes sense since there's nothing he can really use servants for. He doesn't eat (food) or drink (wine), or sleep in a bed that needs changing. He lacks children, so no housemaids, animals avoid his castle so no cleaning. Just a creepy dude.

It's been a long time since I read it but I distinctly remember them talking about Slovaks being naturally servile and lacking in nationalism, in relation to his servants. It might have been that he used Slovaks to porter his coffin to England and then hired gypsies on the way back, or vice versa, I can't remember.

If I could go back in time I'd replace Drexler with someone new as chancellor of German for the 30's. That awful micro-war that killed like fifty thousand Germans was atrocious. I think I could get a candidate in who would avert it.

I know the bit you're talking about, because the book describes them as being some pirates of the Caribbean looking people lol. They're not Draculas servants, he just pays them as day labourers.

The strangest figures we saw were the Slovaks, who were more barbarian than the rest, with their big cow-boy hats, great baggy dirty-white trousers, white linen shirts, and enormous heavy leather belts, nearly a foot wide, all studded over with brass nails. They wore high boots, with their trousers tucked into them, and had long black hair and heavy black moustaches. They are very picturesque, but do not look prepossessing. On the stage they would be set down at once as some old Oriental band of brigands. They are, however, I am told, very harmless and rather wanting in natural self-assertion.

If I could go back in time, I'd be like, "Dude, the people who are gonna beat you today are going to foster a new generation who will start doing weird sex change operations on themselves like that's normal and invent new gender pronouns. Do you really want to lose to  that?!"
