On the subject of 'moose' and 'elk', they are both the same animal and different animals.

Moose (Alces alces) are native to both North America and northern Eurasia. The population in Scandinavia has been known to the Norse people for millennia by the fine old Germanic word 'Elk' and its cognates. So, in Evropa, the giant, goofy-looking, long-legged, long-faced deer of northern marshes and forests are called 'elk'.

Thera's no Alces alces ( alces itself being a genteel Latinization of 'elk') native in Britain, though, so when the Puritans got a shock and landed on Plymouth rock, they had to ask the Indians the name of the giant, goofy-looking, long-legged, long-faced deer of northern marshes and forests they found in New England. They rendered the Algonquin word they got in response as 'Moose,' so that's what they're called in the Land of the Free.

As for the animal called 'Elk' in the States, Cervus canadensis, sometimes known by the absolutely phenomenal Algonquin word 'wapiti,' it also has a slightly more distant relative in Europe: the Eurasian red deer Cervus elaphus. It is plentiful in Britain, so why the early Yankees saw the large, majestic deer of forested hills and decided they couldn't juat call it 'American Red Deer' is a mystery to me.

But that's the way common names go sometimes - at least they're all in the same family. If you want a real shocker, compare what Americans and Europeans most often use the word 'hemlock' for.
