"Zero Punctuation" and "Dev Diary" by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw - The only thing worth watching on The Escapist

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
It's like Yahtzee learned nothing from Rooster Teeth, Machinima, Fullscreen and of cause The Escapist. Back in the day "content creators" used to sell their souls to who ever they could just to get a scrap of ad revenue. There was a time when there was a value in letting someone else do the leg work but that's not been true for like 15 years now. It's never been easier to just go your own way and cut out the middle man. Yahtzee has bought his freedom from The Escapist by selling himself to someone else.

I think the RLM guys are massive fags but they have the right idea. YouTube and Patreon are middle men but they offer a service, video hosting and payment processing are somtihng that RLM couldn't afford to do themselves. They don't need to pay for an expensive LA based studio (or even just live in that shithole) because your job is on the Internet so it doesn't matter where you are. RLM isn't trying to support a massive production with dozens of employees and projects.

It's got to be just laziness at this point right. He'd rather pay others to leach of his successes just because can use MS paint.

I'd be happy to subscribe to Fully Ramblomatic on its own channel, but lumping it in with a bunch of completely irrelevant content of Nick and Jack Packard being obnoxious fags, putting out content no one wants to watch, gives it just the same problem as The Escapist always had. This was the perfect opportunity to fix that major issue. Why the fuck would you do the same thing, again? I don't want anything but Yahtzee in my inbox.

Video is out and turns out it's the same thing as ZP, no surprises there. Though the red does hurt the eyes a bit, something that the yellow never did.
He seemed a lot more negative towards the game than most other reviewers (it has a Metacritic of 92). I can't judge it since I haven't played it, nor do I have any intentions of playing it as I didn't enjoy the first game.
Agreed, the red is too intense, also, doesn't help that the black and red is basically the jimquisition original color scheme, so who knows if we'll get another arc where the red suddenly becomes purple.

The video was alright, it's just the same, I'm not fussed at the new yatzhee model, but I do miss the imp and the doggo doesn't seem like a good substitute. But I mean, it's literally just the same thing with some knobs moved around. That aside, good luck with that whole "independent creatives" malarkey he's spewing at the end, he will be very disappointed if he doesn't get a lot of patreon sheckles, specially if again he's keeping the whole operation going by himself. It's one thing when you just get your salary, another when you see what's really coming in and you share it with the retard typing stupid shit on X.

EDIT:

... or they can already be gorging on cash. Don't know how many people they have in the operation, but if it's 10 or less, that's a pretty nice sum of cash right there assuming it's real patreons and not the incestuous patreon circle jerk.

Good thing he brought up the endings for Alan Wake. Since Remedy went woke, you need to play a bajillion unrelated games to understand the plot and Alan Woke 2 seems to be kind of shit in general, it seems just playing the original and DLC wraps up the series well enough if one is interested in just that. I guess I might give both of these a go, then, sucks for people who were waiting a decade for this to come out I guess.
I dunno the "bajillion" part as most ya just have Control and Quantum Break, but really seems to be leaning more towards the former. An I might sound heretical, but I really enjoyed Alan Wake 2, maybe helped I didnt have insane fanboy expectations and really enjoyed what I got in terms of story and gameplay

Also, can I just point out how its ironic Yahtzee accusing someone of being up their own arse with self inserts, when this wanker made games and books with nothing BUT his own self insert shit, hows that glass house Yahtz.

I don't necessarily think this was a problem in itself - but giving him his own solo show absolutely was a sign that they didn't understand what Jack's appeal is in RLM. Pairing him with Yahtzee is... is retarded. I can't think why a content manager would ever think that was a good idea, except for complete obliviousness.

Jack is a neutral tone. He's never particularly funny, but he's rarely offensive, and he rarely talks over his co-hosts. (At least, after he quit Mr Booze.) The main appeal of Jack is to offset wacky, energetic, eccentric, larger-than-life characters and ground them; he's a garnish, not a main course. Ben Croshaw is not a larger-than-life character. In streams, he's often quiet, brooding, and rarely talkative unless he has a soapbox. Jack cannot serve as his opposite, because Jack is more lively and engaging in person -- it's the exact wrong formula for Jack.

I was never particularly a fan of Pre-rec because I think the magic of RLM is in the editing, but the whole reason that show has its fans is because Jack is a good pairing with Rich, and the two have a natural chemistry: Jack is orthodox, Rich is flippant, etc. Jack's Escapist Escapades have been him trying to carry shows on his back because he genuinely is more charismatic than the rest of the Escapist cast... but he's just not the kind of personality who can really headline a show.
This is why Yahtzee and Gabe worked so well together. Gabe is absurdist while Yahtzee reacts to it, while Gabes lack of reaction to Yahtzee makes him an excellent foil. They're each others straight man.

Yahtz's first new video has a premiere waiting room up.
I would dislike the video if it wouldn't given it more YouTube engagement rating. The red color is horrible and perplexes me as how someone who thinks he can make games adds this kind of eye rape. The review itself is old points being given in the most smoothed edge way possible, only to end in "this is good because fellow journo cock suckers say it's artsy". And the last two minutes is "gimme money" with the gall to say that the new site lets creators more creative freedom. Bitch, your "creative freedom" is doing the exact fucking same videos you did for a decade+, and it's 99.9% likely that future content will be ripping off other creators who did new shit rather than any true innovation. And you know the entire staff will be the same libtards journos with any differing opinions will be summarily fired.

The implication is that Yahtzee is at least part owner of Second Wind. Being the biggest name he's probably the biggest owner.

It wasn't an existing company, it's a company that everyone who recently left the escapist formed themselves. They're making $500,000 a year already, without having released a single product yet*.

(*one video has been out for a day).

The "just enough" changes may not be enough to be "original" if Escapist decides to go for a petty lawsuit.

I guess ZP-style reviews still bring in the paypigs, but being freed from the obligations of ZP/Escapist sounds like he would be able to do stuff he actually enjoys.

Is he still doing one every week?

What he likes doing is writing books which he have admitted barely makes any money. Its baffling how he stayed with the Escapist even after the first mass walk out, and probably would be racking in even more for himself if he just went independent years ago. He even had Lets drown out so there was other things to build up his own channel on too. But instead he went with sharing scraps with a bunch of people with personalities compared to wet paper towels. Makes me wonder how much The Escapist paid him and now with how much Secondwind pays him, Because he is/was essentially the only person that brings in any viewers.

That new theme tune kicks ass though.

Also, reading back through these last few pages about Yahtzee's wife and him moving from Australia to California for her. Did you know that the reason he originally moved from England to Australia was some Australian girl being a fan of his and going all the way to see him too? They started dating and he moved back with her. I was an old school Yahtzee fan so I remember. Her name was Sarah something and she went by Rhubarb in the forums. Why does this man keep falling in love with stalkers from halfway across the world and following them back home?

An Escapist lawsuit at this point might very well only drive more people to support the second wind project monetarily, offsetting the financial flogging from frankly frivolous litigation.

The red is fine, I don't care for the dog, and I wish I could explain why the glasses creep me out so much...they just do.

We'll get used to it.
