This is a good question. Are sperm banks not kosher or something? Why aren't they just doing that?

The last recorded killing by long bow in war was by “Mad Jack” Churchill in WWII. If you’re not familiar with him he’s well worth reading about.

Tread tax: do we think there will be some mystery explosions and unexplained deaths in Qatar? I can’t see the Hamas leadership over there having long and fulfilling lives at this point.

I'm going to assume it'd primarily be pragmatics. The amount of sperm storage and bureaucracy you'd have to prepare for every man in the IDF to potentially be able to store sperm for their (or their family's) personal retrieval at a later date would be off the charts, whereas there'll be significantly fewer people being pushy about zapping their dead son for grandkids (plus the limited window to achieving it further reduces the amount of sperm they'd need to process). Plus there might be a PR element - this way it's ensuring the brave soldiers can still father children from beyond the grave... the other way is more reminding conscripts that they might be going off to die or be maimed.

There's more widely the issue of hotza’at zera levatalah (Onanism). It's not kosher to "waste seed" so highly observant Jews struggle with family planning clinics and e.g. might need to bang their wife while wearing a sperm collection condom -

(with some Rabbis teaching that this is only acceptable if there's a little pinhole in it so some sperm could theoretically go in the wife), although they can do it the old fashioned way if the wife is niddah (on her period). This would be then further complicated if you were allowing sperm donations from all IDF soldiers, because what do you do with the donations from all the soldiers who return from the front completely intact and alive? I doubt Israel would want to maintain a national sperm repository for practically every man in the country, but flushing that sperm would be "wasting seed" since it's guaranteed not be used now, and there'd be objections from people who developed infertility issues at a later date who'd had viable sperm destroyed by the state.

If you want to read some Rabbis sperging about the halakhic ethics of playing Five Nights at Feivel's, this article has a variety of arguments about Levirate marriages and if dead mean can fulfil the Mitzvah of procreation.

I'm not 100% if the IDF's even paying for this. There was an legislation of some stuff around posthumous sperm use with The "Continuity" Bill. Basically, there seemingly was no legislation around posthumous sperm extraction - the challenges generally came when someone other than a soldier's wife tried to actually use the sperm, although there was a lot of paperwork with getting the sperm anyway. The Israeli Ministry of Defence was concerned if this wasn't reined in, then loads of random Israeli women could have dead-soldier babies and then all the welfare payments associated with being the mother of an IDF orphan, so they clarified dead-soldier babies wouldn't count as that. Can't tell if the draft law actually got passed (I'm assuming from the absence of information it did not).

It's quite possible that the soldiers never paid for sperm banking but now their bereaved wives/relatives are paying through the nose to get the sperm extracted and have it banked. I can't find the exact Hebrew phrasing that would let me get more info (?עלות קצירת זרע מגוף מת), but I have found out Israeli lesbians have to pay 800 shekels for donated sperm. It is apparent that for parents who got their dead son's sperm out, they're having to fend off literal hundreds of Israeli women seeking to have a dead soldier's child.

Also training. The IDF is a modern (draft) army. Hezbollah and Hamas are more a kin to whatever training US militas get, so basically fuck all. Also the IDF has advanced optics and an airforce and Hezbollah has what, 8 guys and two anti-tank rockets? I mean, they can still pack a punch but round two will be pretty hard when the other side has sat-coms
