Oh no no no, islam was a darling of the left-marxists for decades beforehand. Since the 70s, at least. Especially since the 70s, the Palestinian and Iranian ructions (and their adoption of western marxist talking points) fit neatly into anti-colonialilst critiques of western society and all dovetailed nicely with Marx's late turn away from the workers of the west, who he largely abandoned as labouring under a false conscious too extreme to be broken, to the oppressed minorities of the undeveloped world. Islam works well with the violently revolutionary rhetoric of marx and lenin. They're a permanently available source of outrage and destabilisation of the "colonialist" west.

As for their mental gymnastics, I assume they will go with the tried and true cherry pick + move the goalpoast and finish with discussing a completely irrelevant yet tangential point to muddy the waters. So start of with "but they attacked security guards" then focus on the lie that anybody outside of Babbit died that day and finish it off by turning it into "but I thought you loved cops!"
