If you think you can just slip a modified build that's different from the open source, people can just build the open source and compare the SHA256 hash with yours.

Most of the competition against stuff like twitter has been shit, whether it's Bluesky, the mastodon clones, gab, Truth, or whatever. Because the main reason people go to those sites is because of politics, which involves them feeling censored or wanting more censoring of others.

It's not a right or left thing, both sides have sucked at it because at the end of the day, people don't want to spend all their free time on a social media site talking about politics or having everything influenced by politics. It's why even when there was massive censorship on Twitter/X, people still didn't feel like leaving, because they could still see funny videos/pictures on there or their favorite celebrities talking about random shit. If these other sites wanted to be serious competition they'd need to lure over some celebrities somehow.
