The character IS a tomboy, and does refer to herself using masculine pronouns/language (I don't know much about Japanese, but as far as I've read from other posters on the farms, the language isn't gendered, per se, but has gendered uses. As in, certain pronouns/nouns/registers are normally only used by men or women. Feel free to point out if I'm mistaken) because she idolizes a (male) character and wants to be him/live a life like his. Which, of course, made the X trannies attach themselves to the character like a cancer.

I know I'm quite late to respond, but I still feel like giving a more detailed explanation about Japanese pronouns.

You are right that Japanese pronouns aren't strictly gendered, but instead have gendered connotations. However, while in English, it is the third person pronouns that are gendered, in Japanese it's the first person pronouns that are gendered (the equivalents of I, me, us, etc.). This gives them an interesting property: they change meaning based on who is saying them.

So in the case of this One Piece character, she refers to herself with the pronoun "boku", which is why a lot of troons claim the character is a pooner, as "boku" id most associated with males. However, "boku" is primarily used by young boys, for whom it carries a casual connotation. If an adult man is using "boku", it is because he is trying to appear humble or meek, which makes zero sense for the character.

But when a woman uses "boku", it signifies she's a boisterous tomboy. Women using "boku" to signify they are tomboys is such a common trope there is even a specific word for it ("bokukko", literally meaning "boku girl"). And she's not even the only character in the show to do so. It's a series about pirates and a lot of the woman pirates also use "boku" for fairly obvious reasons.

The cherry on top is that if she actually were a pooner, she would use the pronoun "ore", which is a macho and informal pronoun used almost exclusively by men. The male character whom she tries to mimic uses "ore", yet despite mimicking everything else about him, she didn't mimic his choice of pronouns, curious.
