Used to play EVE with some of buddies of his, was he a piece of shit or something?

Not really, he was pretty well liked by most people. He didn't "play" the game enough to create waves, and I say this as someone who had chats with him weekly/monthly for one antic or another. His interaction with EVE largely was just answering in-game E-mail and chat messages from the in-house Goonfleet XMPP service. Usually he would give you a fair shake if you actually did stuff in game and ran afoul of the goonfleet directors, people who actually lead and made content is a rare thing in EVE, way more followers than leaders. At one point I was part of the Highsec corporation Rens911 (a reference to Reno 911 and the local trade hub Rens we operated out of) and one of our antics ended up with all of us getting banned. In EVE you have two methods of traveling with normal ships back in the 2006-2010 period, by gates, which you would fly from one star gate to another in each solar system down known "pipes" which was just one solar system connected to another in a chain, to constellations which would branch out to other constellations via further pipes. The other method was basically guild infrastructure which let you teleport from one jump bridge to another via player owned structures. These shortcuts were super important and most people preferred them. My corporation realized that we could camp these jump bridges since we were allied to the SA guild but not the greater web of allied entities. So we wouldn't get swatted by the player owned structure's defensive gear, we'd have Goon friendlies jump into us via the jumpbridge with no recourse to survive.

This caused a shitstorm and we all got banned from Goonfleet, but Vile Rat went around and undid most of our bans because he found the whole incident funny, my personal penance was that I had to donate and outfit a bunch of newbie frigates for the newbie program. Since I actually played the game I fell in with groups that went traitor no less than 4 times. The final time Vile Rat had literally just landed in Benghazi and was too busy to unfuck the situation, which is why my final spaceguild never reunited with Goons until 10+ years later, long after 95% of the members quit the game on both sides.

@attractive_pneumonia Brother I played that game daily for years and welped dreads regularly. Sunk a lot of time into that game and still go to meetups. I love the in depth mechanics explanations though.

As with most things, if you did something cool pretty much everyone will forgive. Think Rooks and Kings with pipebombing. Nobody would blacklist those cats.

Now of course I flew with PL at the time of the "Great War" so I might be a tad biased but I found it difficult to stomach much of the Goon humor and attitudes toward the game but I was/is just a simple Logi pilot so WTF do I know.

I never played Eve, but my Teenage self got lots of entertainment reading Almost Human's posts on the COH boards about the events of that War.

They even ousted Mittani for not letting a tranny in some Penny Arcade sub-corp (who never actually played the game) MeToo FCs (who were actually playing the game and vital for Goonswarm) for attention and asspats.

EVE is good because players are the driver of content unlike the Everquest-WoW genre of MMO which requires constant investment by the developers to create content. EVE is bad because the mechanics are godawful and uninteresting to play, its better to read stories about it than to actually play, particularly back in the 2006-2011 period where the servers would constantly crash or desync mid battle because too many players were engaged and the server CPU couldn't keep up with the mathematics. They still cannot for that matter, they just queue it properly so your action will take a literal hour or two to act out a 10 second cycle of weapons.

My buddy got me into that way back in the late oughts. I didn't play it long, it was a bit of a boring spreadsheet simulator with only brief rare moments of heartpounding, gutwrenching, nervewracking tension, and it had some of the weirdest players I've ever played any game with.
