The looks on those boys faces says everything.
Absolutely wild to think that even 30 years on, nearly a generation and a half later, historytubers and the rest of the terminally online regardless of affiliation claim there's a communism to Hitler revivalism pipeline to explain why AfD's trending so strongly in the East rather than entertain the alternate explanation of the West Germans treating the Ossi like shit for the most part since reunification, not unlike the North/South divide in Italy.

lol...

It's wildly amusing that for a long time the explanation of "The Wessies tried their best and they wasted an ungodly amount of their hard earned money on the ruined DDR but they could not simply catch up!" was the only one I've ever heard.

Then I got up my reading and holy fuck the shitshow of the Wessies being arrogant shitstains bulldozing whatever they could in East Germany and the Ossies being essentially retarded stooges earnestly believing the Wessies were going to save them or something and not exploit them was.... something. I don't know if Reunification could be worse, but it could have certainly been better. It doesn't help that the Germans bar exceptions have worked very hard to bury the DDR as history as much as they haven't worked in burying the Reich.

Also, seriously the Ossies were a depressed, sometimes hard-working people under a frankly weird-ass government, the Southern Italians are mostly criminal parasites exploiting their own. There's no parallel.

Got any recommended reading on the topic of Reunification?

I was a bit stumped for a semi-related and relatively modern comparison when I wrote that, and the North-South divide seemed close enough when I was considering in particular the postwar era with how the Republican/Allied and conservative/Savoyard divide was generally constituted.
I suppose if you really wanted to stretch it (away from a Western/European equivalent) and focus on the more limited, interpersonal perspective rather than an overall regional one, the situation of ex-DPRK citizens in South Korea might be a better choice (at least to my recollection), considering the difficulties and suspicion a lot of them are on the receiving end of.

I feel bad for anybody trying to learn about history in the modern day. There is so much borderline propaganda and effortless pop-history videos that it's almost impossible to separate the good from the bad, at least for the average person. In the late 90s to early 2000s there was at least a sizable effort to portray history with some sort of nuance. The History Channel actually showed real documentaries for a time with even the "Hitler" era having a decent view of the man that tried to humanize him beyond the typical "le evil" view. That's not to say the historical scene from decades past was free from bias because there was and it becomes clear once looking back at it but it was harder to publish a book or TV documentary full of crap than it is to upload a ten-minute Youtube video nowadays.
