I've been relistening to the Biggest Problem (still good, if outdated given that it's nearly ten years old), and really this was the crux of the show. They've barely changed since then:

-Maddox writes funny jokes but ruins them because he starts actually sperging
-Maddox becomes the joke
-Dick is a retard but quick witted enough to give Maddox the little push he needs to be funny during a spergout
-Dick is almost a normal person relative to Maddox, so it's easy for him to reign Maddox (and the show) in
-DIck is still a huge fucking weirdo and Maddox could nail him on it but fumbles it every time

They really relied on each other and the show would never have been popular without them working together. That's what we've seen over and over since then. Maddox's solo show was just weird and unlistenable from the beginning, whereas Dick's show was aimless but very listenable. Really, had he just kept rotating cohosts and talking to them about whatever, it probably could have lasted indefinitely. But the lawsuit completely derailed the show. It was funny at the time, but the obvious resentment he's built with Maddox, as well as pigeonholing himself as a wannabe shock jock once the lawsuit was over, doomed the show to being a retarded show with a retarded fanbase. Look at his live shows and all the people he kept around. He's so desperate for relevancy and completely devoid of morals. But Maddox, like always, fumbles nailing him on it, and makes himself look like even more of a weirdo.

Yes, and Maddox really could have shut this down sooner with videos covering the drama and providing receipts to counter Dick. It would have been beneficial to his Youtube channel by having regular content and views to keep him relevant. Plus he would generated the funds and attention to catch illegal activity and engage legal action for it. He could have rallied the internet and made a big stink.
