Disagree on this point. W/o any pre-nup, women getting alimony is a thing of the past. The court would say “is she disabled?” No. (& if she was there is disability payments for that) “Does she have an education?” Yes. “Can she work?” Yes. Then do it. If she got full custody, she’d get child support payments but her ability to make a good income would be limited. Her standard of living would drop dramatically. So would Nick’s with child support payments. If they split custody she might get something to get set up but over time even less or nothing. They stay together their life of “luxury” continues. They split, both get poorer & children share hassles increase. Maybe neither would even want full custody & that’s the problem. Only advantage to splitting would be getting away from each other. All these years I have never watched American Beauty. It was only that this one time this faggot gets a hardon about something, I decided to finally watch the movie to see what it is all about. Towards the end of the movie, Lester "Pulls up!" and does not act on his urges. Not surprising that Nick admires this character's qualities early on where he drops all his responsibilities as a parent and has p3do tendencies. At least Lester's one kid is in high school unlike Nick's situation where there's 2-3 that aren't.

There is also the attitude of their parents and their money to consider. I tend to think that they know exactly what Nick is and don't trust him with any real money of his own. I believe that even the house in a trust. If Nick gets divorced, the parents, their attention and their money would probably shift entirely to Nick's children. At the point he gets divorced, Nick would be a failure at everything in his entire life. Failing as both husband and father. They would probably provide Nick enough to avoid becoming like Digibro living on the street, but nothing more.

American Beauty always struck me as just another 90s retarded nihilism movie that only garnered popularity because it was "different" at the time of it's release. The movie doesn't have a real, honest or creative point it's just: "Did you know that people don't live in a 1950s TV commercial and sometimes people can be very dysfunctional?" No shit sherlock. Leaving Las Vegas is also a retarded nihilist movie but while that movie feels like a Benadryl contact high it does have an actual real point, one can be happy in their own misery even if it means their death. Maybe that's why American Beauty was popular. It preached to the choir of soon to be wine moms and closeted queers like Nicky, showing them what they wanted to see instead of making a point.

The original script supposedly had Lester do the deed. But the people funding the movie forced the screenwriter to change it. There is no alternate ending, but the ending of the film and his death makes more sense IMO if Lester had done it.
