I don't think it's a big mystery, a lot of youtubers got into it because they crave adoration, but the internet moves on quickly and has a short memory so sooner or later these guys start losing views and eventually they pull some stunt to stay relevant. You see this kind of thing a lot with Youtubers who go after a younger audience, although there may be some pedophilic intent, a lot of times they simply know that kids tend to put trusted adult figures on a pedestal and they exploit that. That's why these people never just come out to friends and family, it's always a big announcement with a youtube video where they talk about themselves for an hour like it's some major historical event.

It's not even a calculated career decision, it won't bring him a fraction of his peak fame. Loss of fame and popularity are a tough trial for your ego and psyche, only the more well-adjusted come out fine on the other side.

I agree it's not thought out at all, seems like a popular last-ditch effort for the desperate because of the online LGBTQ community's effort to maintain a constant air of praise and admiration, even if it's only an act.

Since the Millennial solution to a mid-life crisis is trooning out, I wonder what Gen Z's is going to be. A lot of them are already trooning out or falling for the femboy/programmer socks "meme" pretty early on in life, so maybe once they hit twink death they'll start "coming out" as otherkins and demanding to be taken seriously? Maybe for the Ipad Generation it'll be the inverse, coming out as straight and non-trans.

I still occasionally hear this in my head every few years. It's a shame that instead of "learning to love himself" like he did in this video, Charlie instead ran away from himself and has removed all traces of the man he once was in favor of playing pretend and chemically mutilating himself to assuage his self-doubt.
