I think that would have admitted her if they could not lower her blood glucose or she was in kidney failure. Otherwise, the fact that she admitted not taking her medications is a big red flag that she is non-compliant. Keeping her in observation at the ER was the right course of action. As @L. Ron Hubbard's Cat said, diabetes is a manageable condition through diet and medications, but neither of which she is interested in following. There is no point in admitting a patient that is non-compliant for a condition that can be easily managed through a diabetes clinic. I suspect that she will need to be on insulin which will require her to test multiple times a day and also require her to go on a specific diet. I am not sure how well this will go.Yeah, she won’t simply have been dumped out into the cruel, cold world. She should have been admitted with her blood sugar that high, to make sure she was properly stabilized. She either signed out AMA or led them to believe she was following up.
Edit 1: We are not sure what the Kuwait doctor told her but I suspect that the conversation was similar to the one she had at the ER. Diabetes is universally understood and treatments are similar worldwide. She moved to Canada to get a second opinion. I bet she did not like the answer and might try to get back to Kuwait soon.
Edit 2: As far as cost goes, she would be covered for the medical procedures in Canada but not in Kuwait. However, insulin and test strips are not covered in Canada but might be cheaper in Kuwait. In the long run, diabetes management might be cheaper in Kuwait.
