Emphasis mine. I think this is a fundamental issue along with his alcoholism. Look at how Nick constantly talks about how he has to “correct” his church, his kids’ educational co-op, and other people. For some reason he thinks he’s not just the arbiter of all knowledge but an accomplished debater. Nick thinks he’s both smarter than everyone and more persuasive.

Nick is delusional.

I don’t just mean stuff like wearing the same shoes until they were worn out so we could have new ones every school year. I’m talking about giving up his weeknights to run us to practices, scrimmages and games — supporting us with his focused presence when he probably would have rather been chilling at home alone after a day of hard work. Or passing on the relaxing vacations he would have preferred because his kids wanted to go to amusement parks. Plus getting up at 4AM and spending his weekends at gay-ass ice hockey tournaments when he could have been sleeping in to recover from a brutal work week.

My dad did all of that and more, and he never pointed it out to us or complained. Our mother made sure we knew, though: “You kids won the lottery when you were born to a man who knows he’s not the center of the world.” Can you imagine Nick living the same way? He’s so invested in his resentments because he feels they give him carte blanche to drink as much as he needs to cope with “adulting.”
