Let me also remind you that all of this started because Dylann Roof murdered nine Black churchgoers in a crusade to start a race war. Case in point: his bastardization of showcasing the Confederate flag as his battle cry moments before the shooting. I didn’t know that anyone was tearing down statues of farmboys. I thought the statues were of generals/senators/presidents/founders of states and nations. You know, Ruling Class types. Theres a word for folks like that, by the way…

For those who don’t know, William Penn, a Quaker, was a pacifist. He did not militarily battle the Delaware (or the Leni Lenape) who laid claim to the lands for which he had received a charter in Pennsylvania. As a result, he worked out a treaty and bought lands through negotiations with the Delaware chiefs. Through negotiating these treaties, Penn was part of the natives' "chain of friendship." Penn upheld his end of the treaty and did not trick or otherwise renege on his commitment to the natives. He also paid a fair price for the land. His relationships with the indigenous tribes he counted as his neighbors were amicable. And, like it or not, he played a pivotal role in the founding of what we now call Pennsylvania. Therefore, taking down the statue is absolutely ludicrous- if they want to commemorate the indigenous tribes, it’d be better (and less divisive) to just add some commemorations to them within the same park. For chrissake…add instead of subtracting.

Are you being deliberately obtuse? The precedent this sets is that anybody in charge NOW can rewrite, revise, ERASE their own nation's history because those figures don't fit their progressive way of life.

The man was a tyrant who slaughtered my ancestors for the crime of being from the wrong side of the sea, then went around destroying everything papish he could find. We still have statues of him, though. We remember our history, rather than trying to bury it and pretend it didn't happen.
