I also grew up in the South. We were shown Alex Haley's, "ROOTS," and were told it was a documentary. Mind you, this was almost 20 years after the Gambian government told the world Alex's sources were frauds and it started being viewed as fiction.

I thought the average experience of a slave in the US was constant beatings and torture until I was in my 20's. I visited an old plantation curated by the offspring of some of the slaves that lived there. Most of them were getting freed 80 years before the emancipation proclamation after 10-15 years of labor. Most of their families traced their bloodline to the Arab slave trade. A huge amount of people from slave lineages with christian names weren't forced to take them, but chose them out of gratitude after being freed.

We also had a 20ft tall civil war memorial in our cafeteria. Half the wall was packed with confederate imagery and there was at least a half dozen rebel flags. If you had a confederate flag patch on your backpack or something, you would get a 3 day suspension. We got a LOT of mixed messages about the civil war, and this was the late 90's.

For me, "white man bad" was never part of slavery and segregation lessons. It was always north vs. south and the Southern viewpoint didn't get a ton of airtime. It was framed at this point as a war to decide slavery with the south wanting slaves and the north wanting them to be free.

WW2 is covered in middle school History. The Holocaust wasn't touched on, but Russia agreeing to a non-aggression pact with Germany before being backstabbed is. They briefly mention war crimes with 99% of the focus being on the Nuremburg trials.

To Kill a Mockingbird was framed to us as a story of a lawyer who made a very unpopular decision to represent a man everyone in town considered guilty as sin. It's a story of how the rule of law must be applied fairly to everyone, no matter how deserving or not they are of it. A direct reference to Benjamin Franklin John Adams was made for representing the British soldiers in court after the Boston Massacre.

In general, segregation and slavery were framed as wrong because on their face they violate the words of the Declaration of Independence:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

I think one thing zoomers and doomers struggle with is that I was taught that our history was messy, and while we stepped over the line a few times in the past, we have always corrected ourselves eventually. Change moves slowly because change disrupts people's lives and people die if change happens too rapidly.

Zoomers were taught that they live in a perfect democracy (we are a constitutional republic) and when they see the obvious cracks they either put their heads in sand or get to dooming like it's the end of 1999. They are being robbed of a lot of their history, and it really sucks for them.

We read Animal Farm and 1984 as juniors. We read Lord of the Flies in 6th grade.

The sort of Jews into building tunnels believe it is a sin to not vote for whoever their rabbi tells them to. That's why depending on the election their weird shtetls in NY/NJ either go 100% Democrat or 100% Republican. Sometimes you'll hear of goy politicians sending representatives to meet with these rabbis, it's fucking weird.

If anything the message of the book is how quickly and easily it is to descend from democracy into violent mob rule. In short, that civilization is fragile and inside us are baser natures waiting to emerge since we are fallen...

While Golding really didn't say much about his personal politics, he was a person who considered Christianity central to himself and society, and his rural Cornish maternal roots resonated heavily in him. Both he and his writing are hardly libshit screeds, in fact quite the opposite.

This irritates me more than forcing kids to read propaganda, namely subverting good stories to their cause.

I hated that book, the only ones that I enjoyed were Shakespeare. I consider it a waste of time to read most fictional books as they lack relevance to real-world applications and skills.
