There is no standard. If you’re in a foreign jail you’ll need help from the media and someone to lobby for you in order to get any attention.

The US has never just rushed in for all jailed Americans. If you have none of the above maybe, just maybe, you’re mentioned in a cable and someone notices.

Most prisons don’t even report they’ve arrested an American immediately. Those reports are usually every 90-180 days. Many Americans rot in prisons for months and months before anyone back home even knows they’re in jail or prison.

Why would his father lie about him dying after spending the past week doing the interview circuit because he was deathly ill (ICU)? What good would it do now to claim he's dead if he's not? CRP is physically incapable of staying offline. If the theory is that they faked his death so they could secretly let him go well how would that work when he shows up next week? Having an American citizen die in Ukrainian custody for saying dumb shit a year ago is not exactly a win for Ukraine.

Alls Lira has to do to fake his death is to claims he’s sick (real or not) and then stop writing home.

Ever try to check up on a pretrial prisoner status in Ukraine or Russia? It takes weeks sometimes months for them to even get back to you if they’re still at the same location. Sometimes they lose mail privileges and the person you can get on the phone or email has no idea.

Edit: if he has actually died that means the prison contacted the family and they’ll be sending a death certificate. This happens pretty quick. They can just whip up a pdf one usually the same day. Why his father didn’t produce any evidence is suspect.

Edit: it’s entirely possible he got transferred due to illness and hasn’t been able to communicate. In many countries when you reach a new facility you don’t have privileges immediately.
