Jet gets heat because he's the director and had a massive ego trip after season 1. He wants to own the successes but none of the failures. Add in that as director he is detached from what people actually want to see and constantly interrupts with self inserting. Check out any of the post-season interviews he did, especially with Emplemon, to witness his hubris, it's hilarious how full of himself he is. That line about "advancing culture" and "lifting people up" was said with sincerity.
Jet will earnestly talk down to fans (and participants) when he feels like it won't cost him anything and is silent when it may, such as mid-season. Jet is who talked up the season 1 edits and how big of a leap season 2 would be. So he talks down to fans and talks up his own work, then when his work is displayed he's derided for failing to deliver.
Sam isn't always entertaining but he at least attempts to cater to what people want and keep things interesting, willing to course correct and admit when something is boring. He seems to be on Twitter a lot (too much?) looking at what people like and dislike and takes that into consideration. He isn't there to talk shit to viewers, if anything he's supportive through retweets and asking for specific moments. Asking for ideas constantly is pathetic at times but he doesn't pretend otherwise, as seen at the end of season 1.
That said, I think Sam has little respect for the viewers and this is pure money to him, but he has enough sense to show appreciation and thank the people throwing money at him nonetheless. That is a key difference.

What was he doing in between season 1 and season 2? His social media would imply hanging out and partying but his own words were that he was pulling 16+ hour days sleeping in the office working on a terrible season 1 edit, blocking criticism as it rolled out. A lot of those tweets since deleted.
In short, Jet talks big and fails to deliver. If he focused on real improvements instead of vague ideas he'd be better off but instead he keeps it ambiguous and hypes everything well beyond the team's ability. His lofty estimations were reflected in the absurd prices of TTS and fishtoys earlier in season 2.
Anyone who thinks he's doing hard work sitting in a basement for 6 weeks isn't considering the full picture. Jet will get a substantial payout after 6 weeks of hard work, yet he seems to spend more time sending TTS than improving the show. I know plenty of people who would do a 6 week gig with no days off for a decent payout. Some jobs are just that, it's not much of a feat, it sucks in the moment.
It's also apparent that Jet has no qualms about lying to Sam's face. Once, Sam asked if they had been shilling Zipp and Sam's coffee throughout the show and Jet said they make sure the fish do that. This isn't true, they stopped doing it early in the season. Zipp is effectively an inside joke and after thought among fans and the contestants.
Another example is when Sam asked if people liked the karate, Jet said they do but if they don't then they can watch another room in the house, as if there's anything else to watch during karate. Fortunately, Sam seems to have made the executive decision to end karate so maybe realizes Jet's input is wasted.
Finally, when Jimmy was retard-raging and Sam had to head out, he asked Jet if they were good to watch Jimmy for the night, clearly intent on keeping Jimmy around for longer. Jet insisted they always do. Fast forward to Jet cracking jokes with Ben, who was supposed to be watching Jimmy, and Jimmy loudly stating "I'll be right back!" before heading upstairs alone and lunging at Brittany. Jet made zero effort to make sure Jimmy was tard-wrangled and it could have been disastrous.
Jet tells Sam what he thinks Sam wants to hear and that probably has more to do with where he is professionally than his ability.
Should Sam cut Jet loose it'd be clear that Jet gets by purely on the good graces of Sam.
If Jet would learn to shut up and stay out of the spotlight then his image would improve drastically. Focusing on improving his project(s) and seeking genuine feedback would go a long way, too.

Frank is continuing to harass TJ while he looks for crickets. Frank asked him again why he ran to the basement when the horseporn TTS came on, TJ says "There's no use talking to you". He's following TJ around and talking like Sam, calling TJ a bug and that he's into horse porn, saying the crickets probably give him a boner, etc.
Sam asks Frank what they should do if they bring a gallon of lube in the house. Frank says they can lube him up and have the fish try to catch him. I'm pretty sure this is just a joke but I admit it would be interesting to watch this.
